4.6 Readability Analysis
As OETT has a higher lexical density than TETT,there are more content words in OETT.It is reasonable to assume that OETT is less readable than TETT.In this section,RANGE(Paul Nation[3])is em ployed to analyze the readability of tourism texts and testify whether the hypothesis is true.
RANGE can be used to com pare a text against vocabulary lists(baseword)to see what kind ofwords in the text are and are not in the lists, and to see how many of the items in the text are covered by the lists. It can also be used to com pare the vocabulary of two texts to see howm any words they have in comm on.
Table 4.16 Results of Range-GLS/AW L

GLS/AW Lstands for General Service List&the Academic Word List, which testifies the form ality of a text.Table 4.16 shows TETT has a higher coverage of baseword 1 and baseword 2 than OETT(27.12&26.40,12.69&11.76),and a slightly lower coverage of baseword 3(7.80&7.85).As for the words not in the list,OETT has a higher level than TETT(53.99&52.39).The data suggests TETT ismore formal and less readable than OETT as more types in TETT are covered by GLS/AW Lbasewords. In viewof families, fewer families in TETT(TETT 1828&OETT 1860)illuminate higher repetition once again.(https://www.daowen.com)
Both OETT and TETT have more than half of the types(53.99%&52.39%)not covered by GLS/AW Llist.Namely, tourism promotional texts, although they are written texts, don't havemuch in common with GLS/AW L.Then the writer will test the similarity of words in tourism promotional texts with the basewords of BNC.RANGE BNC is a new version including 16 basewords, and each has1,000 words arranged by the frequency patterns of spoken English.Because baseword 15 is about proper nouns,Chinese proper nouns like Xi'an,Huanglong,Huangshan may not be collected and baseword 16 is mainly about interjections, exclamations, hesitation procedure in spoken English which does not contribute much for this study, baseword 15 and baseword 16 are excluded for calculation. The data is presented in Table 4.17.
Table 4.17 Results of Range-BNC

Tourism promotional texts tend to be colloquial asmost of the types in OETT and TETT,above 76%,can be found in BNC basewords(not in the list,OETT 22.99%,TETT 23.28%).Among the 14 basewords,OETT is found to havemore types in eight of them(1,2,4,8,9,12,13,14),revealing a polarized tendency. On the one hand,OETT demonstrates a higher coverage of types than TETT in the first several basewords(baseword 1,2,4)which aremost frequently used.On the other hand,OETT coversmore types than TETT on the whole(77.01%&76.72%).The evidences prove OETT is inclined to be more readable.
In conclusion,a larger proportion of GLS/AW Lin TETT proves TETT tends to be formal in style;a larger proportion of BNC in OETT proves that OETT tends to be colloquial and easier to read.Less families of TETT in GLS/AW Land BNC validate the translation hypothesis of sim plicity.
