Situation 2:Office talk about China’s contribution...
Maj.Tomas:Rumors are in the air that the budget for UNMISS is going to be cut again next year.
Cpt.Li:Quite possible.US President Trump threatened to further reduce financial support to UN last week.
Maj.Tomas:It seems that only Chinese government is increasing its share for UN peacekeeping operations.
Cpt.Li:Yes.China is only second to the US in peacekeeping budget contribution.
Maj.Tomas:Really?I thought it was Japan.
Cpt.Li:China is one of the five PMs who deployed the largest peacekeeping troops. It ranks the 10th among all the TCCs.
Maj.Tomas:Are there any other kinds of Chinese contingents besides transport and engineers in all missions?
Cpt.Li:Infantry battalion in South Sudan,L-2 hospital in DRC,helicopters in Darfur, security guards in Mali. There may be more in the near future.
Maj.Tomas:One of my colleagues was selected to be trained last year, together with SOs from many other countries in Beijing.
Cpt.Li:It must be the Training Course for UN Peacekeeping Staff Officers.Chinese government has taken over some training from UN DPKO.It’s another way to contribute to world peace and development.
