◎I.The Site of the Qin Palace Provided the Basis for the Naming of Qinhuangdao

The site of the Qin Palace for the emperor's short stays is located in Beidaihe District, Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province. The earliest discovery of the architectural ruins of the Qin Palace was in the early Republic of China. In 1924, American archaeologist Dr.Carl Whiting Bishop discovered the remains of the ancient culture at Jinshanzui. In 1925, Carl Whiting Bishop organized a team to conduct an archaeological survey on Jinshanzui again, and found a large number of Qin and Han cultural relics, which proved that the Jinshanzui site was of the Qin and Han ruins and based on that he wrote an archaeological report. From 1984 to 1986, the relevant departments of Qinhuangdao organized several joint investigations in the Jinshanzui area, and found the existence of a cultural layer with a large number of architectural relics. In 1986, the Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics carried out an archaeological excavation and cleared up two foundations of the Qin houses. From 1987 to 1991, the Hebei Culture Relics Bureau instructed Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics to organize an archaeological excavation, which discovered 14 units of palace building sites in four groups with an area of 15,800 square meters. The excavation was rated by the National Cultural Heritage Administration as one of the top ten new archaeological discoveries during the Seventh Five-Year Plan period. In 1996, the site was announced as a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level by the State Council.

The site of the Qin Palace revealed extremely far-reaching historical and cultural value and spiritual value. It is important for displaying the long Chinese cultural history, and fully proves the origin of the name of Qinhuangdao, the only city named after the title of Emperor Shihuang, the first emperor, in the Chinese history.
