TEACHING REFORMS

Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University has a long，glorious history and a fine tradition.It has always been one of the leaders in China's medical education.In recent years，Shanghai Medical College has also implemented medical education reforms to improve the education and training for students to match the new developments of various health reforms and new demands.

Fudan University is one of the pioneer universities appointed by the Chinese Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health to jointly perform the“Outstanding Doctor Education and Training Program”and implement the“Top Innovative Medical Talent Education Model Reform Project”.

We have gradually improved our medical student cultivation system through the following 3 approaches：“New Mentorship”，“Curriculum System Reform”，and“Academic Research Platform Construction”to support the implementation of this programme and cultivate outstanding medical talents who can keep up with the latest developments in modern medical science with a good knowledge base，solid professional skillset，strong innovation initiatives，and substantial growth potential for our country.

1.Optimize our curriculum design，transferring our education model from“knowledge and learning process focused”to“skill and competence oriented”.We will continue to focus on the needs of our students and actively implement“small class teaching”and“heuristic teaching”（such as“PBL”，problem-based learning）to improve our students'critical thinking；

2.We have always emphasized the training of academic research skills and innovation potentials.We will open our labs and clinical skill learning centers to all the students and create a platform for their academic research and innovative experiments，enhancing our medical students'skills in basic research，clinical thinking，and medical practices.

3.With the“5+3”model，the advantages of a professional master's degree have emerged，such as a shorter training period，higher income，and better social welfare，which attract 5-year bachelor graduates to choose this model to further their medical education.Focusing on clinical practice，it is imperative that the thesis of a SRT trainee aims to address a clinical problem.With the quality improvement of candidates，professional degree graduates will become the main force in clinical practical research in the near future.

4.With the popularity of the“5+3”model，a balance has been stuck between professional and academic degrees，as indicated by the decrease in the admission score of National Graduate Entrance Examination for clinical academic degree pursuers.This，in turn，encourages improvement of clinical academic degree education in China.By revising the category of the National Entrance Examination for college students and expanding their coverage，applicants who are armed with the bachelor degrees in basic medicine or biology can be permitted to pursue clinical academic masters.Furthermore，by reconstructing the pathway，the graduates with bachelor degrees and academic master's degrees in clinical medicine can take the examination of qualified medical practitioners and SRT so that they can be trained as high-level clinicians with research competence.Additionally，with the revised training plan，candidates for academic master's degrees will place more of an emphasis on theoretical competence in laboratory skills.
