BACKGROUND

Since the integration of China in the world in 1978,remarkable achievements and accomplishments have been made in clinician training. However, with the increase in medical demands, the Chinese educational system still faces some challenges.Regardless clinician training,it is imperative that the quality of clinical skills is improved.

For medical professionals, medical education is a life-long course that involves proper education and training in college, postgraduate training, and continuing education. How can we educate and cultivate our students to prepare them for future medical practice? How could the medical school education be integrated into the entire education course?

Upon successful completion of the first-stage medical education, medical students are required to start their second stage of graduate medical education. In the second stage, they are supposed to acquire and master clinical skills to be qualified for independent clinical practice. In developed countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, standardized residency training(SRT)has been introduced to guarantee the quality of medical services.

Residency training and postgraduate training are 2 different, separate ways for medical graduate students to train in China. However, these 2 training approaches overlap in content and sequence.(https://www.daowen.com)

Since 1998,Chinese medical schools have been permitted to confer both academic and professional degrees for graduate medical students. An academic degree in clinical medicine requires an emphasis on scientific research rather than on clinical skill. For a long time,Chinese medical schools have trained their students without differentiating between professional and academic degrees. Therefore, the professional master's degree graduates confer relatively weak clinical competence and have difficulty meeting clinical demands.

In 1999,the Law of the People's Republic of China on medical practitioners was formally enacted, which stipulated that anyone who fails to obtain a practice license and be registered as a medical doctor will not be allowed to practice medicine.According to the law,it is mandatory for graduate students of a medical school with a bachelor's degree to undergo at least 1 year of clinical practice before being permitted to take the National Exam of Medical Practitioners.Without a license, professional degree students are strictly prohibited from independently conducting clinical practice.

To cultivate practical skills,a pilot education programme was conducted in Shanghai to integrate SRT into professional degree education with the aim of developing a standardized model nationwide. As a new approach,the“5+3”model can eliminate the risk of illegal clinical practice through mandatory trainee examination passing required for qualified medical practitioners.
