3 England under the Tudors(1485—1603)
Henry Tudor’s coronation as King HenryⅦin 1485 marked the beginning of a new age in England.During the Tudors’reign,England changed from a medieval kingdom into a modern state, and its economy developed from feudalism into a capitalist economy. The bourgeois class of great merchants became increasingly important vis⁃à⁃vis the nobility. They cooperated with the Tudor monarchs in Parliament on a range of issues, and in return the Tudors did their best to protect the merchants’interests. The Tudors promoted commerce and trade, tolerated enclosures, reformed the church, and built up the English navy. All these laid the ground for English geographical expansion.
