FP:Russian rocket ride:$63 million per US astronaut.
MP:Now it is in detail.First, let's focus on the earthquake in Japan.
[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
FP:Yes.High levels of radiation leaked from a crippled nuclear plant in tsunamiravaged northeastern Japan after a third reactor was rocked by an explosion Tuesday and a fourth caught fire in a dramatic escalation of the 4-day-old catastrophe. The government warned 140,000 people nearby to stay indoors to avoid exposure.
MP:Tokyo also reported slightly elevated radiation levels, but officials said the increase was too small to threaten the 39 million people in and around the capital, about 170 miles(270 kilometers)away. Our EBTV News correspentdent Reporter-1 is at the spot.Hello,R-1.
[On-line broadcast reporting at Spot]
R-1:Yes,MP & FP with our viewers. In a nationally televised statement,Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation has spread from four reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant in Fukushima state, one of the hardest-hit in Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami that has killed more than 10,000 people, plunged millions into misery and pummeled the world's thirdlargest economy.R-1,EBTV from Fukushima.Back to you, studio.
[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
MP:Many thanks R-1.Officials just south of Fukushima reported up to 100 times the normal levels of radiation Tuesday morning,Kyodo News agency reported. While those figures are worrying if there is prolonged exposure, they are far from fatal.
FP:Kan and other officials warned there is danger of more leaks and told people living within 19 miles(30 kilometers)of the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex to stay indoors to avoid exposure that could make people sick. Our EBTV News correspondent R-2 is on the phone.Hello,R-2,can you hear me clearly?
[On-line broadcast reporting by phone from Spot]
R-2:Yes,FP.I can hear you clearly.Just some minutes ago Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told residents in the danger zone.[I quote some here]“Please do not go outside. Please stay indoors. Please close windows and make your homes airtight,”“Don't turn on ventilators. Please hang your laundry indoors.”“These are figures that potentially affect health. There is no mistake about that.”[the quote is over].FP.
[Broadcast reading in Studio]
FP:Weather forecasts for Fukushima were for snow and wind from the northeast Tuesday evening, blowing southwest toward Tokyo, then shifting and blowing west out to sea. That's important because it shows which direction a possible nuclear cloud might blow.
[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
MP:The nuclear crisis is the worst Japan has faced since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.It is also the first time that such a grave nuclear threat has been raised in the world since a nuclear power plant in Chernobyl,Ukraine exploded in 1986.Some 70,000 people had already been evacuated from a 12-mile(20-kilometer)radius from the Dai-ichi complex and about 140,000 remain in the zone for which the new warning was issued. Our EBTV News correspondent R-3 is at the spot.Hello,R-3.
[On-line reporting from Spot]
R-3:Yes,MP.Edano said, workers were striving to stabilize three reactors at the power plant that exploded in the wake of Friday's quake and tsunami, after losing their ability to cool down and releasing some radiation.A fourth reactor that was shut down caught fire on Tuesday and more radiation was released.MP.
[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
MP:Yes,The fire was put out.Even though the fourth reactor was shut down, the fire there was believed to be the source of the elevated radiation. What was Edano's reaction to the situation.
[On-line broadcast reporting from Spot]
R-3:Yes,MP.Edano said[I quote here]:“It is likely that the level of radiation increased sharply due to a fire at Unit 4,”he continued,[quote]“Now we are talking about levels that can damage human health. These are readings taken near the area where we believe the releases are happening.Far away, the levels should be lower.”[The quote is over].
[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
FP:Yes,R-3.Some information about this issue is from other media. They also focus on Edano's comments. Can you give us more detailed information now?
[On-line reporting from Spot]
R-3:Yes.He said another reactor whose containment building exploded Monday had not contributed greatly to the increased radiation.Officials said 50 workers, all of them wearing protective radiation gear, were still trying to put water into the reactors to cool them. They say 800 other staff were evacuated. The fires and explosions at the reactors have injured 15 workers and military personnel and exposed up to 190 people to elevated radiation. That's all so far.Back to you, studio.
[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
MP:Yes.Many thanks to you,R-3.
FP:Indeed!Take care of yourself too,R-3.
MP:In Tokyo, slightly higher-than-normal radiation levels were detected Tuesday but officials insisted there are no health dangers.About this point, our EBTV News correspondent R-4 is there.Let's contact him now.
[On-line broadcast reporting from Spot]
R-4:Yes,MP.About this point,a Tokyo government official Takayuki Fujiki said,[I quote here]“The amount is extremely small, and it does not raise health concerns. It will not affect us.”[The quote is over].Back to you, studio.
[On-line in Studio]
MP:Many thanks to R-4.
FP:Kyodo reported that radiation levels nine times higher than normal were briefly detected in Kanagawa prefecture near Tokyo and that the Tokyo metropolitan government said it had detected a small amount of radioactive materials in the city's air.
MP:Donald Olander as the professor emeritus of nuclear engineering at University of California at Berkeley, said,Japanese government officials are being rightly cautious. He believed even the heavily elevated levels of radiation around Dai'ichi are[quote]“not a health hazard.”[the quote is over].But without knowing specific dose levels,he said it was hard to make judgments on the evacuation orders.Olander continued:
【Super】
DONALD OLANDER
PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF NUCLEAR ENGINEERING
AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY
“Right now it's worse than Three Mile Island. It's nowhere near the levels released during Chernobyl.”
FP:On Three Mile Island, the radiation leak was held inside the containment shell—thick concrete armor around the reactor. The Chernobyl reactor had no shell and was also operational when the disaster struck. The Japanese reactors automatically shut down when the quake hit and are encased in containment shells.
MP:Olander said encasing the reactors in a concrete sarcophagus—the lastditch effort done in Chernobyl—is far too premature.Operators need to wait until they cool more,or risk making the situation even worse. In addition, the death toll from last week's earthquake and tsunami jumped Tuesday as police confirmed the number killed had topped 2,400,though that grim news was overshadowed by a deepening nuclear crisis.Officials have said previously that at least 10,000 people may have died in Miyagi province alone.About the people's current condition, our EBTV News correspondent R-5 has something to say.Hello,R-5.
[On-line broadcast reporting from Spot]
R-5:Yes,MP.Millions of people spent a fourth night with little food, water or heating in near-freezing temperatures as they dealt with the loss of homes and loved ones.Asia's richest country hasn't seen such hardship since World WarⅡ.
[On-line in Studio]
MP:Indeed. How about the Japanese Government's reaction about this condition so far?
[On-line broadcast reporting from Spot]
R-5:Yes,here is one example.Hajime Sato as a government official in Iwate prefecture, one of the hardest-hit,he said deliveries of supplies were only 10 percent of what is needed.Body bags and coffins were running so short that the government may turn to foreign funeral homes for help.Back to you, studio.
[On-line in Studio]
MP:Many thanks to R-5.
[Broadcast reading in Studio]
FP:Though Japanese officials have refused to speculate on the death toll,Indonesian geologist Hery Harjono has dealt with the 2004 Asian tsunami. He said it would be[I quote here]“a miracle really if it turns out to be less than 10,000”dead[the quote is over].
MP:The 2004 tsunami killed 230,000 people—of which only 184,000 bodies were found. The impact of the earthquake and tsunami on the world's third-largest economy helped drag down the share markets. The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average plunged for a second day Tuesday,nose-diving more than 12 percent to 8,422.21 while the broader Topix lost 13 percent.
FP:To lessen the damage,Japan's central bank injected$61.2 billion Tuesday into the money markets after pumping in$184 billion on Monday.Initial estimates put repair costs in the tens of billions of dollars, costs that would likely add to a massive public debt that,at 200 percent of gross domestic product,is the biggest among industrialized nations.
[On-line in Studio]
MP:In a bid to stop the reactors at the nuclear plant from melting down, engineers have been injecting seawater as a coolant of last resort.Yuta Tadanoa is 20-year-old pump technician at the Fukushima power plant,he said he was on the second floor of an office building in the complex when quake hit.Our EBTV News correspondent R-6 is just with him now.Hello,R-6 and Mr.Yuta Tadanoa.
[On-line bradcast reporting from Spot]
R-6:Yes,MP and our EBTV News viewers. Now,he is standing besides me.Hello,Mr.Yuta Tadanoa. It's your turn.
Interviewee:It was terrible. The desks were thrown around and the tables too.The walls started to crumble around us and there was dust everywhere. The roof began to collapse. We got outside and confirmed everyone was safe. Then we got out of there. We had no time to be tested for radioactive exposure.I still haven't been tested. We live about 10 kilometers(6 miles)from the facility. We had to figure out on our own where to go.I worry a lot about fallout. If we could see it we could escape, but we can't.
R-6:Thank you very much,Mr.Yuta Tadanoa.MP,that's it.
[On-line in Studio]
MP:Yes,many thanks to you both.
FP:The Dai-ichi plant is the most severely affected of three nuclear complexes that were declared emergencies after suffering damage in Friday's quake and tsunami, raising questions about the safety of such plants in coastal areas near fault lines and adding to global jitters over the industry.

[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
FP:Yes.The latest about North Korea. The NK says willing to discuss uranium enrichment.North Korea said on Tuesday it was willing to discuss its uranium enrichment program at nuclear disarmament talks, clearing one of the hurdles for the resumption of long-stalled international dialogue. Our EBTV News topical news correspondent R-7 is there.Hello,R-7.
[On-line broadcast reporting from Spot]
R-7:Yes,FP and our EBTV News viewers.Pyongyang walked out of sixparty talks over two years ago, declaring the process dead, after the United Nations imposed a new round of sanctions for conducting nuclear and missile tests.According to KCNA-[Korean Central News Agency],the North's foreign ministry spokesman said,[quote]“(We)indicated the position that we can go to the six-way talks with no preconditions and we are not opposed to discussing the uranium enrichment issue at the six-party talks.”[Quote is over].FP.
[On-line broadcast reading in Studio]
FP:Yes,R-7.KCNA said, the North's comments were made during a meeting with Russian foreign ministry officials in Pyongyang.Washington and Seoul have demanded the North come clean on its uranium program.Last November, the North stunned the world with revelations of major advances in its uranium enrichment program which would open a second route to make a nuclear bomb alongside its plutonium program.
[On-line broadcast reporting from Spot]
R-7:Pyongyang says the uranium program is for peaceful,energy-producing purposes.
The United States and South Korea have said they want the U.N.Security Council to review the North's uranium enrichment program, arguing it breaches international agreements.China,a veto-wielding member of the Security and Pyongyang's main ally,is opposed to any U.N.action against the North.Back to you, studio.
[Broadcast reading in Studio]
FP:During the tortuous six-party nuclear negotiations that began in 2003,North Korea and dialogue partners China,Japan,Russia,South Korea and the United States reached agreements that would dismantle the North's nuclear weapons in exchange for economic aid and diplomatic recognition. Those pacts fell apart before they were implemented and North Korea tested nuclear devices derived from plutonium twice,in 2006 and 2009.
MP:Earlier this month, the United States said it was ready to talk to North Korea and resume humanitarian aid to the isolated state under the right conditions.Stephen Bosworth, the State Department's special envoy for North Korea, told a Senate hearing that Washington was working to end the stalemate in six-nation talks.he told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,[quote]“We do not regard regime change as the outcome of our policy, but we do regard a change in regime behavior as necessary to any fundamental improvement in the overall relationship.”[the quote is over].
FP:Both China and the United States have said the first step toward a resumption of six-party talks must by inter-Korean dialogue.Tension between the two rose to its highest since the 1950-53 Korean War,after the South accused the North of sinking one of its naval ships and later bombarding a South Korean island.
MP:Pyongyang denies any involvement in the sinking and accuses Seoul of goading it into launching the later artillery attack. An attempt at reconciliation last month came to nothing after low-level military talks between the two sides collapsed.

Breath of Broadcast Hardnews in English[Topical News]
1.Long sentences.Long and sufficient breath is demanded especially when newsreaders or anchors are reading a long sentence.Usually it is combined with the sense groups. Here it is necessary to cite one paragraph as an example to demonstrate THE point:“Now/let's take a look at some comments on China's impact/on art market./It's said China overtakes Britain in art market./According to Reuters'report in London,/China overtook Britain/as the world's second largest art and antiques market/last year,a new report showed, and British art officials/voiced concern/that EU levy planned in 2012/would further undermine its position.”Breath has to be trained routinely. Then, they can prevent awkward pauses or sudden stops when faced up with long sentences.
2.Stable breath. When announcing and anchoring in front of the studio camera, the anchor should sound deep with power and forceful in order to meet the demand of the audience's auditory sense. The voice shouldn't be shouted out loudly, but supported by strong deep breath controlled by the pubic region.Regarding the high-pitched voice condition, they desperately need to improve their inhalation skills and strengthen the voices. But when reading the news in front of the camera, they still need to bear in mind to stabilize the voices by using breath. Not only does inhalation help strength the voice, but also help adjust body gesture during shooting.By controlling the breath they take in actively, the pubic region keeps them sit up straight at the same time.
3.Breath-training.Touching upon broadcast breathing in English, most of the EBA trainees have to confess that they didn't do the vocal practice and breathing practise every day.Obviously one one hand they were not perseverant and hardworking enough, ont the other hand they did not have the patience to wait for those practises to take effects. So,here comes their punishment. They might sound like that their houses were on fire when they broadcast every piece of news. For example, one of the trainees'announcing contents was about Fukushima earthquake and tsunami. It is an emergent event but not all the fact the trainee was going to tell the audience is emergent.Sometimes the trainee has to state clearly those numbers but she still sounded very rushing. One of the sentences goes,“To lessen the damage,Japan's central bank injected$61.2 billion Tuesday into the money markets after pumping in$184 billion on Monday.”Because the trainee could not hold long breath, when she said those numbers she didn't make them clear enough to audience and didn't attach enough emphasis to the numbers. It must be very uncomfortable for audience.Overall, the audience can only feel that something terrible happened and she was very worried about that.As to detail, they didn't catch much useful information because her voice sounds like an asthma patient.
(二)英语硬新闻之时政新闻播报情绪
Mood Broadcast Hardnews in English[Topical News]
1.Appearance.When presenting a piece of tragic news, one of the trainees still kept a face of sweet smile.Obviously, she forgot to take the news content into consideration, but only focused on her own performance in front of the studio camera.Actually, this is quite understandable. At first they paid more attention to their appearances. Some of the female trainees even went to the hairdresser to make their hair styled delicately for shooting.
However, the way of broadcast reading is as vital as the decent appearance. When reading a piece of news, the anchor explains not only the fact, but also the psychological texts. The latter part flows out naturally with the facial expression and the intonation, which will visually have a leading effect on the audiences'emotions.
Objective as they are supposed to be,they need to learn how to fit their emotions to the news we present.Talking about the facial expressions, the extreme opposite side of smiling is tightening. If there was no expression on their faces at all,it would make them seem like wearing a mask.Tightened faces must come out of nervousness. But they'd better look natural and unrestrained, especially when reading the twords on the autocue,so that the viewers feel easy to watch the program.
2.Tones and Mind. Some trainees'tones sounded like they were satisfied to know that nine people were killed by a construction crane, basically because they were reciting a paragraph instead of telling audience what had happened. It could be deadly dangerous for a news reader or anchor to recite without knowing the content of the news.
For instance,in the copy there is a sentence goes,“High levels of radiation leaked from a crippled nuclear plant in tsunami-ravaged northeastern Japan after a third reactor was rocked by an explosion Tuesday and a fourth caught fire in a dramatic escalation of the 4-day-old catastrophe. It was definitely a long sentence. So the trainees were busy with dividing the sense groups, ignoring the fact that the essence of the news was a disastrous one firstly. That problem appeared to be even worse when they faceed the autocue.Again, they sounded rather excited to declare what they had got.
Here it is very important to point out that brodacast news announcers and anchors do not play a role as commentators. They have to be objective, but it does not mean they are not supposed to have emotions and mood. The best way of treating the contents is that they should put themselves into the events, the disaster, even the basketball game, and only in this way can they truly become the“master”of emotion.
3.Contents and Reflections.Talking about the mood,it is necessary to repeat that they should be clear about the content of the news. For example, when they read political news or news about disasters, their tone should be formal and serious. If it comes to the sports news, entertainment and culture news or the news about some anecdotes, they can adjust our tone to a more exciting and flexible one.The mood also determines the speed of their broadcast reading or anchoring.News in serious mood should be read relatively slowly while less serious news can be read faster. With their faces on the screen, they should also adjust their facial expression according to the different moods. When presenting the serious news, they should appear to be more convincing and reliable.
And they can be more delightful and personalized while presenting the less serious ones, for instance, sports news and weather forecast.Visual effects are sometimes more important than other means of communication. Most people will focus on more on how they deliver instead of what they deliver.
So it is important to read and report properly according to the mood of the news,or misleading might occur. If they appear to be delightful while reading a piece of news about a deadly accident,“a construction crane kills 9 people”,their audience may show the discontent to him/her.

Sensegroup of Broadcast Hardnews in English[Topical News]
1.Origin of Sense group. It is the most essential as well as the most difficult element to deal with in broadcasting. It is a kind of presentation of one's English skills. They may easily find out that though native speakers read news at a very high speed, they can still be understood and fully grasped. Why?Because they have already owned a perfect language basis and a good sense of the language. For us,as Chinese,we need to enhance our language ability and enlarge our vocabulary and English cultures'acquisition.
To carry on broadcast readings basedon proper sensegroups is really essential for a news presenter. In some way,the ability can be shaped by the gift you possess and the efforts you make.So after some period oftraining practice, most of the trainees have picked up the capability to divide a sentence into several organized parts in a very short time when a paper script is available. But when they turned to the autocue, they would find no access to the whole sentence because amplifying letters provided little contents. That is to say, they didn't even know what the news was talking about.
As a matter of fact, some of the trainees could do quite well when this condition appeared. They were presenting the news in a very natural way that the audicence could easily grasp the highlights of the news. Those who felt impossible to handle because of their limited linguistic competence, especially it has become one of the obstacles for non-native speakers like most of our trainees.
2.Knowledge accumulating. The knowledge of English culture including language itself, current issues and international relations counts more when the news announcing in the process. For example, when the trainees saw the city Fukushima Dai-ichi,they had no idea what it was famous for or what important events just took place there. If it was their hometowns,at least they would be familiar with the background information.
In a word,a qualified news announcer must be a qualified newsman firstly. In order to correctly grasp the sense-group,one should accumulate background knowledge of various fields. After grasping the sense-group,we also need to classify the words which need to be emphasized and adjust the tone to present them.It requires a large amount of reading and practicing. You need to be clear of the main idea of the whole passage as well as the content of each sentence. In the last training,it was hard to even just read through all the words, not mention realizing what they were reading about. They found it really difficult to grasp the sense-group at first sight as the copy was rolling continuously on the autocue while they were on the live-line.But at least one can emphasize the numbers and some key verbs. But it was easy for them to stumble as the numbers were complicated, and they still need to be aware of the emphasizing points in announcing.
3.Sense of groups is among the basic elements required when presenting and it is almost the most important one. When listening to the news reports,we generally pay more attention to the contents rather than the tones and voices. That is to say,the groups of words do matter a lot.News presenters have to have an overall sense of the word groups,to make appropriate and accurate pauses, and to emphasize the key information.
However,it's hard for us non-native speakers to reckon and to grasp the whole sentence's idea through the tiny little teleprompter'screen. As it's our first time to use the teleprompt,we were all hurried and rushed to follow the rolling screen and neglected the groups of words. We may blame it on our non-native identities. But to make a tremendous progress,we are required to read more articles and essays, watch more news to build up the language.
Here about the sense-group,there are top three obstacles summed up by EBA trainees are names, numbers, and conjunctions as well as prepositions,or rather, grammar.Besides, there are many quotes which also disturb the normal sentential contents even though thye are aware that they cannot say quotes are no good.On the one hand, they largely lessen the transitional pressure. On the other hand, the news becomes more vivid and believable. While I was reading listed quotes like, for example:
Quote one goes,“Please do not go outside. Please hang your laundry indoors. Please close windows and make your homes airtight.”
Quote two goes,“Don't turn on ventilators. Please hang your laundry indoors.”
Quote three goes,“These are figures that potentially affect health. There is no mistake about that.”[The quotes are over.]
Facing these sentences, they could feel like an outsider as if all the matters being talked about were not relevant to them at all.And the high frequency of“Quote”and“The quote is over”almost exposed them to a machine position.copy and recopy. This part also makes them feel lacking of ability to control language. Thus, their not-so-solid basic skill of English is to blame. That means after learning English for so many years,it is still not as the way used as the mother tongue. The language sense has not formed well enough yet. This can be scaled up when the breaking news came and the autocue does not work that well.
(四)英语硬新闻之时政新闻播报团队
Teamwork of Broadcast Hardnews in English[Topical News]

“英播”训练“线上”环节配合的景象:“主播台+摄像+提词器+传真稿”(2014年)
1.Attention with heart.Teamwork is one of the most important compounds of success. We are all in this together!Without the cooperation between every single member of the team,we couldn't get through all the trainings. As a presenter,she/he cannot just focus on her/his own script. When one finishes her/his part,she/he also needs to listen to the co-presenter's contents,in order to help her/him out when accident occurs. When the anchor is corresponding with the reporter,she/he also needs to listen carefully to figure out what the reporter is talking about,so as to give feedbacks verbally or non-verbally——blinking and moving her/his head at certain moments.
But when they were on air, most of the tiem they couldn't follow their co-workers'contents.So,they just randomly nodded to show that they were corresponding. If they were familiar with the transcript, the effects of the copresenting would be much better. But on the live line, one cannot gurantee that the co-workers could be familiar with enough.Meantime,it is also very important to cooperate with other members on the live line, including those who are controlling the cameras, the recording, the teleprompter, and the breaking news handouts.Through all the trainings, all of us have acquired the skills in controlling all these equipments. But after that,no one of us thinks it is as interesting as it looks.Instead,it is a responsibility for the one who was operating on it.
2.Nervous-controlling.Nothing more nervous could compare with an on-live status, especially when they are cast on the screen.Even more nervous anyway, they will come across The BREAKING NEWS!The printed script will appear down to their hands from the editor-in-chief's table suddenly and give them much more pressure that may take their breath away even though one is extremely aware that there are team-mates behind them.
Then,at this moment one as a news anchor can do is to focus, concentrate and stare at what she/he has been given. It is not how his/her appearence looks or what his/her dresses shows that matter so much.It is the sense that shows in his/her eyes and the whole expression on his/her face and the body language that counts more.Spirit that shows in his/her eyes may easily lose as a result of reading from the teleprompter or a lack of practicing against a white wall.
For most of the EBA trainees, they have been practicing against the white wall and it surely backs them up when they were on air. They act more natural than before and more confidence come to them instead of uncomfortableness.Talking to a camera is much more complex than talking with a microphone. It requires participation and concentration from all parts of their bodies.
3.There is no single head.It seesm news anchors sometimes fight alone, sometimes with their co-anchors.It's fundamental to have teamwork spirit because they always need to cooperate with other mates behind the scene, not only the co-anchor sitting on the same news desk, but also the whole producing crew, including the cameraman etc. When cooperating with the co-anchors,they need to keep the same pace and similar mood with them.Especially when lining with correspondent, they need to keep talking to avoid the blank period caused by any technical failures. When cooperating with other members of the producing group, they need to communicate with them in time, sharing own thought of how the scene is arranged.
