Bai Jie A-mei

Bai Jie A-mei

In ancient times, there were an old couple at the foot of Wutai Peak of Cangshan Mountain in Dali. The couple were nearly 60 years old and had no children. They made a living by rubbing grass and planting vegetables.

Once, they planted some pumpkins at the foot of their house wall. The pumpkin seedlings grew very fast.In winter, they got a big pumpkin, almost as big as a small dustpan. The couple had never seen such a big pumpkin before,so they were very happy. The husband said,“We'd better keep the pumpkin to the Chinese New Year's Eve and share it with the villagers.”His wife smiled and said:

“Okay!I have the same wish.”

On the New Year's Eve,they cut the pumpkin open in the middle with machete.Suddenly,a white, fat and beautiful little girl jumped out of the pumpkin and stunned the couple. The husband was tongue-tied for a moment and then asked,“Who are...are you?”The little girl said,“I am your daughter.”At the beginning, the couple felt a little scared. But the little girl was so cute. They became happy. The wife said,“All right, all right, husband. We have been worrying about having no child. Please accept her.”Since then, the little girl had been living with the old couple.Because the little girl was white, fat and beautiful, her parents named her Bai Jie A-mei.When she grew up,people called her Bai Jie.

Bai Jie A-mei was a fairy who grew with the wind and soon grew up as a beautiful girl. She was smart, capable and talented, and was soon elected to the palace to become the king's concubine. One summer,Bai Jie went out to play. She came to the Xiayi River and took a bath in the river.Suddenly,a broken wood came from the downstream and hit Bai Jie's feet.In this way she was pregnant.Later,Bai Jie gave birth to two sons.It is said that the two sons are Duan Siping and Duan Siliang. When Duan Siping grew up,he became the governor of Nanzhao, and later he destroyed Yang Ganzhen and became the first king of Dali Kingdom and was called the first emperor. After Bai Jie died,Duan Siping built the Linghui Temple and named his mother the Goddess of Mercy.
