Bai Niangniang
In ancient times, the King of the Bai people had a granddaughter named Bai Niangniang. She was beautiful, virtuous, intelligent and capable, and proficient in family affairs and state affairs. When she grew up,she became Piluodeng's wife.People all said that they were perfect for each other.
At that time,Piluodeng was the leader of Baiyachuan(Midu County).Bai Niangniang loved this place as soon as she came here. She often urged her husband to take good care of the people. She asked him to visit the people to know their sufferings and help them for the fields and farmland,so that the people could lead a better life.
One day after Piluodeng returned from a visit to the people,he told his wife that there were two lonely old men in Baiyi Village and their life was really hard.Bai Niangniang asked him to give the old men some rice and money.Another day when Piluodeng told Bai Niangniang that there was a family with many children and their mother had difficulties in raising them,Bai Niangniang suggested him to give them some alms.Another day,a single man in his thirties told Piluodeng that he had no money to afford a wife. After Bai Niangniang heard this, she gave the man some money to marry a wife and held the wedding ceremony personally. She also told him to work hard in the fields and manage his family diligently in the future. The young man was very grateful to her kindness.
Later,Bai Niangniang told Piluodeng to bring some papers and pens when visiting the common people and make a note for the families who need to be cared for. Then they could go to the warehouse to get money and things with the note.Piluodeng did as Bai Niangniang said, and the people were very grateful for that. However, many people did not know that this was Bai Niangniang's idea.
One year, there was a flood in Midu Bazi. The water was several feet deep and the waves were several feet high. After knowing the villages at the foot of the mountain would be flooded,Bai Niangniang told people to move halfway up the mountain.
A few years later, there was rinderpest and all the cattle were dead, and there was no cattle for farming. As the saying goes,“It's useless to get up early without cattle for farming.”Bai Niangniang was very anxious about it,and then she remembered her mother's family. She went back to Binju and asked her father for seven white cows, because the cows were able to plough several mountains of land.In a few days, they plowed the land and the people happily planted crops. These sacred cows could not only plough the fields, but also dance. It was said that even several generations passed, people can still see the dancing of white cows when they look in the mirror in front of the wall.
A few years later,Piluoge,Piluodeng's elder brother, became the king.Piluodeng had difficulty in walking because he broke his feet in a battle. In order to ward off evil,he built a Guanyin Temple behind Dongfo Village. He decided to become a monk and the state was presided over by Bai Niangniang.
One year, there was a drought, which made the crops dry up,and even people had not enough water to drink.Bai Niangniang led people to get the water from Bajiaochong to irrigate the farmland. Then the seedlings were saved, but it was really inconvenient for people to live in the high mountain.
Bai Niangniang thought of the divine water of Dragon Cave in her mother's home,so she went back to her mother's home and brought back a bowl of water.Oddly enough,no matter how many people drank the water, they could not drink it up.Later,Bai Niangniang dug a well and poured the bowl of water into it.Since then, the well has always been full and tasted sweet. In order to remember the kindness of Bai Niangniang who walked hundreds of miles to find water for her people, people called this well Niangniang Well. After the death of Piluodeng and Bai Niangniang, people changed Guanyin Temple into the Living Buddhist Temple.Statues of them were made on the altar of the temple. They were regarded as the Village Gods of the three villages of Dongfu,Bachong and Chaoyang, and they were called“the Holy Spirit of the Living Buddha of the King of the East.”
