Giving Opinions

When we participate in a discussion,we find it helpful to have some opening gambits up our sleeves. The following expressions are useful in getting people listen to us and giving us thinking time while we organize our ideas(they go from informal to formal down the list):

I guess the stock market will remain volatile for a while.

I reckon…

I kind/sort of think that…

I really think that…

I believe that…

If you ask me,I think…

In my opinion,…

Personally,I think…

For my own part,…

From my own perspective,…

You know what I think?I think…

Speaking for myself,…

As far as I can see,…

As far as I’m concerned,…

As I see it,…

The point is…

My point of view is…

Wouldn’t you say that…?

Don’t you agree that…?

Do you think that…?

I’d just like to say that…

I’d like to add something here…

I’d like to point out that…

Agreeing

When we agree with an opinion,we may express our level of agreement. The following expressions can help us show our strong agreement or half agreement:

Strongly agreeing

You are darn right!

Absolutely!/Correct!/Exactly!/Right!/Sure!/True!

I couldn’t agree more!

That’s absolutely true!

I take your point.

I’d go along with you there.

I’m with you on that.

That’s just what I was going to say/thinking.

That’s just how I see it / what I think.

That’s exactly my opinion.

That’s a good point.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Half agreeing:

Yes,that’s true,but…

Mmm,perhaps/possibly.But…

Yes,in a way.But…

Yes,I agree up to a point.

Well,you’ve got a point there.

There’s something in that,I suppose.

I guess you could be right.Yes,I suppose so.

That’s worth thinking about.

Disagreeing

Likewise,we can show our disagreement politely or strongly like this:

Politely disagreeing

You have a point,but…

Maybe,but what about…

Well,I’m not sure really.

Do you really think so?

Well,it depends.

I’m not so certain.

I see what you mean,but…

Mmm,I’m not really sure whether you’re right.

I’m inclined to disagree with that.

I wouldn’t agree(with you)(on that).

I’m sorry,but don’t you think that…?

Strongly disagreeing(getting more formal down the list)

No way!

Are you kidding?

Come off it!

Don’t be so silly!

You must be joking.

Don’t make me laugh!

Are you serious?

You can’t be serious.

It’s nonsense to say…

You don’t really mean that,do you?

No,I don’t think so.

I disagree.

I entirely disagree with you.

I can’t agree with you there.

I’m afraid I don’t agree.

I really can’t agree.

I wouldn’t accept that for now.

I wouldn’t go along with you there.

I’m afraid you are wrong there.
