World Heritage properties may support a variety of ongoing and proposed uses that are ecologically and culturally sustainable.The State Party and partners must ensure that such sustainable use does not adversely impact the outstanding universal value, integrity and/or authenticity of the property.

T he residences of historic personalities are an integral part of world architectural heritage with a special historical significance.Different from other kinds of historic buildings, these residences possess unique social, cultural and spiritual values.At the same time, these residences are a precious resource for the development of contemporary society.Protection and revitalization of these notable residences can benefit our society in numerous aspects, including politics, society, culture, education and economy among others.Undoubtedly, the protection and rational utilization of the residence of historic personalities are of great significance if they are integrated into urban sustainable development projects.However, in Jinan, due to complicated property rights, poor architectural quality and damaged aesthetic elements of these residences, which are under the pressure from urbanization, numerous important residences have been badly transformed or demolished.The residences included in the protection list are not optimistic either, due to a lack of relevant policies and regulations, outdated concepts of protection and technology, poor management and financing issues.The lack of consistent planning makes it difficult to sustain this valuable heritage in a good condition, so it can be passed on to future generations.
In recent years, the maturity of sustainable development policy in the international cultural heritage field has provided a new perspective for the protection and development of these residences in Jinan.This sustainable development is based on two aspects: the preservation of tangible residences and the development of the intangible culture of these historic persons.Sites preservation is a prerequisite, while broadening the intangible culture is the final aim of the historic residence sustainability and development.Considering the situation of urbanization in Jinan, it is essential to form preservation and development principles for historic personalities’ residences with sustainable social management practices, cultural relics protections, ecological environmental protections, and local economic development according to a sustainable development strategy.
