(Note:The underlined letters indicate that the insurance is compulsory for the designated party.)

Compared with the “F”group,if you wish to assume more responsibilities with logistics or if the importer requires you to do so,you can employ the “C”group—CPT,CIP,CFR,CIF.While CPT and CIP are applicable for any mode or modes of transport,CFR and CIF are only for sea and inland waterway transport.See Table 5-5 for a comparison of their applicability and distribution of obligations and risks between the importer and the exporter.

Common to FCA,CPT and CIP,you fulfill your responsibility for delivery once you transfer the goods by placing them under the disposal of the carrier. But CPT and CIP extend your responsibilities beyond those under FCA.Under CPT,you need to pay for the main carriage and under CIP,the main carriage plus insurance for this leg. However, please be noted that, paying for the main carriage,or the main carriage plus insurance for this leg doesn’t mean you are held responsible for the safety of the goods until they reach destination. As mentioned above, risks transfer once you deliver to the carrier.Besides, according to Incoterms 2020,CIP is an Incoterms rule that now requires at least an insurance with the minimum cover of the Institute Cargo Clause(A)(All Risks, subject to itemized exclusions),instead of the Institute Cargo Clause(C)(Number of listed risks, subject to itemized exclusions)under Incoterms 2010.Table 5-6 shows you how to convert between FCA and CPT,or between FCA and CIP.

Common to FOB,CFR and CIF,you fulfill your responsibility for delivery once you move the goods on board the ship. But CFR and CIF extend your responsibilities beyond those under FOB.Under CFR,you pay for the sea freight and under CIF the sea freight plus the insurance for the sea leg.Similarly, paying for the sea freight,or the sea freight plus insurance for the sea leg doesn’t mean you are held responsible for the safety of the goods until they reach destination. As mentioned above, risks transfer once you deliver to the carrier.Table 5-7 shows you how to convert between FOB and CFR,or between FOB and CIF.
