7.1.4.2 Clean & unclean bill of lading清洁提单和不清洁提单

♦Clean bill of lading清洁提单

A clean B/L is one on which the carrier doesn’t make any adverse remarks or notations(called “clauses”)about the condition, packaging,or quantity of the goods.Importers and their banks typically make payment on condition of a clean B/L under a letter of credit transaction.

♦Unclean bill of lading不清洁提单

An unclean B/L is one with adverse remarks or notations(called“clauses”)having been made by the carrier indicating that the goods received for shipping(or their packaging)look wet, damaged,in doubtful condition,or not of correct quantity.Importers and their banks normally do not accept an unclean B/L for payment under a letter of credit transaction. An unclean B/L is also called a claused B/L,dirty B/L,or foul B/L.Expressions that denote an unclean B/L could be “packaging is not sufficient for the sea journey”,“goods which are properly stored at the port of loading have been shipped on board and partially wet and not in good condition”,etc.
