Wall Street
Wall Street is the name of a large street that runs from Broadway Road to the East River in the southern part of Manhattan in New York City．It is only one-third of a mile in length and only 11 meters in width．The street is narrow and short，only seven blocks from Broadway to the East River，but it is known as the“financial center of America”．Managers of banks，insurance，shipping，railroads and other companies set up by American chaebol such as Morgan，Rockefeller，and the Dupont consortium are concentrated here．The famous New York Stock Exchange is also here，and is still the headquarters of several major exchanges，such as Nasdaq，American Stock Exchange，New York Futures Exchange，and so on．The word“Wall Street”has now gone beyond the street itself to become a proxy for the neighborhood and to refer to financial markets and financial institutions that have influence over the entire U．S．economy．
With the rise of the American economy，Wall Street’s position in the world financial system has been gradually improved．In 1944，the Bretton Woods Conference established a new international monetary system，with the dollar pegged to gold and other currencies pegged to the dollar．The whole world began to enter the era of“dollar standard”，and the international financial center also shifted from London in Europe to Wall Street in the United States．After World War II，the United States became the leader of the capitalist world，and Wall Street became more and more stable as a global financial center．Its movements can affect markets across Europe and America，and even around the world．
