1.1 Research background
Imagery have become a current heated subject and the main concern of translation studies. An image in literary sense is a composition of a mental figurative representation that a cognitive subject creates through his/her cognitive processing under his/her psychological operation of perception and imagination. It is not only a tangible expression, but also a mental representation operated by cognitive subjects'aesthetic optimization(Han,1995).Literary discourse is generally composed of large quantities of images which possess both linguistic and pictorial implication.Studies on image has focused on the aesthetic essence of literary works and has concerned about cognitive subjects'artistic appreciation of literary creation.Gestalt image(image-G)in literary works refers to the representation of a certain scene,a certain artistic conception or an atmosphere as a whole in a literary text.It is a ubiquitous whole existing in literary works which constructs conceptually aesthetic image(Jiang,2002).
Research on“image”and“image-G”in literary translation does not derive from functional pragmatics but is firmly based on functional-oriented studies featuring process-oriented and product-oriented studies of translation. It is often concerned with the identification of the textual function that used to deal with image translation and image-G actualization. It is worth emphasizing that the studies are almost aimed at resolving what translators themselves see as problematic. In addition,image-G actualization is considered as a form of intercultural communication taking place in a social context and particular emphasis is placed on the function served by target text in the target context, which is in line with other theoretical approaches of functionaloriented translation studies. However, cognitive nature of image translation and image-G actualization is usually overlooked by these categories of traditional translation theories.(https://www.daowen.com)
Generally, previous studies on translation strategies of image in literary translation have been restricted to a small scope of research corpus and materials, such as case studies based on the translation of literary master's works or different translated versions of a literary text, rather than a macroscopic context of linguistic systems. Thus the previous studies are far from perfection. In recent years, inspired by the theoretical perspective and cognitive paradigm of multi-angle view on cognitive interdisciplinary researches, new progress has been made in cognitive study on translation process from the aspect of translators'schematic representation. In fact, researches on image-G actualization is primarily concerned with translators'cognitive mental process. To be specific,image-G actualization includes both linguistic and mental actualization in translators'production of translated texts, which has been applied to cognitive translation equivalence, cognitive model of discourse translation, translators'subjectivity, translation aesthetics, and cognitive contexts in translation, etc. However, the study on the translation strategies of image-G has been confronted with challenges arising from the absence of a systematic theoretical model, insufficient methodology-related research, and inadequate scheme for research resources.
On these premises, the present study takes relevant notion, concepts and principles from Gestalt psychology, cognitive linguistics and cognitive translatology to probe into translators'underlying cognitive mechanism of their mental construal in image-G's representation, with the aim of proposing cognitive translation strategies of image-G actualization and examining their validity through case studies of literary translation.Image-G actualization is regarded here to be the experiential manifestation of translators'mental cognitive processing,in which the cognitive operation at conceptual level is intrinsic mechanism of cognitive translation strategies used by the translator in lifting target readers'perception of image-G in TT.
