1.4 Layout of the study
The study begins with an analysis of the notion,structure,and cognitive properties of the core concept“image”and“image-G”.It reviews the literature studies on image translation and image-G actualization from various theoretical perspectives and summarizes their contributions and limitations,which provides the possibility and feasibility of the present research.Then large quantities of concepts,theories and principles involved in the framework of cognitive linguistics and Gestalt psychology are listed and analyzed to lay the theoretical foundation for the present research.Regarding this as guidelines,the study roundly probes into translators'mental recognition mode and cognitive psychological processing in the practical operation of image-G actualization and further summarizes four categories of corresponding relations between the constructed image-G in target text and the original image-G in source text.Accordingly,this study constructs a theoretical framework for five cognitive translation strategies of image-G actualization in literary translation.At last,the effectiveness of the proposed strategies of image-G actualization is validated,which is conducted on the basis of a contrastive analysis of three translated versions of a classic Chinese poem“Jiangxue”.
Considering that,the book is composed of four parts in eight chapters.
The first part is composed of background introduction and literature review.Chapter One gives an overall sketch of the research background,research questions,significance,methodology,and layout of the study.Chapter Two reviews and comments on the previous research on image and image-G actualization in literary translation from four theoretical perspectives and summarizes their findings and limitations.It is thus proposed that the interdisciplinary researches of cognitive linguistics,Gestalt psychology and cognitive translation can be adopted as a new perspective for the present research,on whose basis studies on theoretical construction of cognitive translation strategies and translators'cognitive psychological processing get a manipulated theoretical frame.(https://www.daowen.com)
The second part serves as the principal part of the study.Chapter Three provides a theoretical framework for the present study of image-G actualization in literary translation.The cognitive interdisciplinary view of the present research is set up by examining the relevant conceptions,theories and principles in the framework of cognitive linguistics and Gestalt psychology and they are served as the theoretical foundation.It is analyzed in two aspects as embodiment and experiential basis of image-G as well as construal of image-G.Then it concludes the image-G construal mode translators follow.At last,it make an attempt to establish a theoretical framework for the present study by giving the self-designed flow-process diagrams.Chapter Four gives a systematic analysis of translators'construal of image-G in source text.At first,translators'aesthetic embodiment of image-G is clearly elucidated as the cognitive basis.Then it probes into five perceptual organization principles of Gestalt psychology translators adhered to in their recognition of image-G in source text.It continues to make a tentative and exploratory study on how cognitive dimensions of translators'construal on image-G play the role of monitoring the image-G actualization in literary translation,which serves as a proof of its cognitive dynamicity.At last,it examines the cognitive styles and cognitive means translators adopted in their conceptualization of the representation of image-G in literary discourse space,which is illustrated at lexical,sentential,and textual level respectively.Chapter Five explores translators'construction of image-G.Ideal and non-ideal types of image-G actualization in literary translation are summarized.The former refers to complete correspondence between the original image-G and image-G in target text while the latter involves inclusive correspondence,crossed correspondence and disrelation.
The third part proposes several types of cognitive translation strategies of image-G actualization and provides case studies for the appraisal of these strategies.Chapter Six develops five types of cognitive translation strategies of image-G actualization adopted by translators in literary translation.It also puts an interpretation on their cognitive motivation.Chapter Seven provides a case study on the appraisal of proposed cognitive translation strategies adopted by translators,with the detailed analysis of their realization degree of image-G actualization in three English translated versions of Jiangxue.
The last part,Chapter Eight,concludes research findings,limitations in the present research and future research prospects.
