2.4 Research on image-G actualization
Jiang Qiuxia(1998)proposed the theory of image-G actualization in her doctorial dissertation Aesthetic Progression in Literary Translation:Image-G Actualization. In her viewpoint, translators'cognitive operation of image-G actualization in literary works is a two-step process, first is mental actualization and then linguistic actualization, which refers to translators'construal of original image-G in ST and the construction of it in target discourse respectively(Jiang,1998,1999).Based on the theoretical approach and major viewpoints of the theory of image-G actualization,a considerable amount of literature has been conducted over the study on image-G actualization in literary works.
Meng & Feng(2005)made a thorough study on several critical issues of image-G actualization in image translation of classic Chinese poetry.Their intensive investigation on the compatibility between image-G and artistic conception pointed to the high aesthetic equivalence at the level of literary poetic realm.Their findings support the hypothesis that image-G actualization is presented in a harmonious representation of the artistic conception formulated by translators. It was concluded that the theory of image-G actualization is applicable for the study on transference and representation of artistic conception in image translation of classic Chinese poetry.
Xin(2001)made an elucidation about influence factors of translators'dynamic attention and mental scanning in their conceptualization of image-G,which involves several aspects as their identification with authors'aesthetic intention, the degree of their dynamic equivalence in aesthetic progression, and interfering elements of their aesthetic perception. Then he concluded that image-G in ST is equally difficult to be transferred into topologically structure or relational correspondence of TT.Its type of geometry is regularly topology-like and approximative with the construction of target readers'aesthetic models and artistic conception.
According to Li(2009),there are two interrelated conceptual integration networks in translators'cognitive process of image-G actualization of classical Chinese poetry, namely, deconstruction and construction networks of image-G.The deconstruction and construction networks of image-G are referred to as its actualization procedures. He subdivided it into two general classes as literal and nonliteral procedures, among which, oblique procedures of image-G actualization comprise transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. He concluded that translation procedures always imply shared topology network at a certain degree in translators'conceptual array,as oblique procedures can only be interpreted with reference to specific image-G representation, that is,empirically.(https://www.daowen.com)
With regard to the most prominent difficulties about artistic conception reappearance and aesthetic construction in the translation of classic Chinese poetry, namely, fuzziness and conciseness,Wang(2005)applied the theory of image-G actualization. He demonstrated that classic Chinese poetry, with its high density of conciseness language and the possibility of different interpretations of the same image-G,is bound to entail fuzziness on different levels. He discovered that the application of the theory of image-G actualization can solve the main difficulties in the process of artistic conception reappearance. To be specific,it can make distorted artistic conception restored, dislocated artistic conception corrected and lost artistic conception completed.
By a comparatively in-depth exploration about four translated versions of Shipin(《诗品》),Wang(2012)concluded that the theory of image-G actualization gives a full play of its potential in achieving artistic harmony, equivalent connotative meaning and aesthetic affinity. It can be regarded as an illustration to prove the interpretive power of the theory of image-G actualization to the reappearance and transference of artistic conception. His findings revealed that the reappearance and transference of artistic conception in the translation of classic Chinese poetry is mainly determined by translators'mental construction and conceptual appreciation of image-G in the original.
By projecting image-G onto both translators'mental experiences and dynamic cognitive schema throughout their translation process,Su & Wen(2018)probed into cognitive translation strategies on constructing, deconstructing and reconstructing image-G in literary translation. The study concluded three types of cognitive translation strategies, that is,image-G replacement strategy,image-G internalization strategy and image-G innovation strategy. It provide valuable references for translator's cognitive psychological process in literary translation of image-G actualization.
