4.4.2 Specificity of image-G in textual space

As the second cognitive diagram dimension, specificity posits a decisive influence over the level of accuracy rating image-G in translators'construal.Like other dimensions,it is entirely relative in nature with respect to the semantic primes in textual space.Although proper degree of specificity is determined by relevant context in translators'specific conceptualization,it hinges ultimately on the conceptualization figure, which is subject to the interaction effect of certain textual description and translators'intention. In general, insufficient detailed and definite textual description will reemphasize omitted characteristics of image-G,whereas excessive detailed and definite textual description will facilitate translators in identifying implied and new characteristics(Tabakowska,1993).As a result, the higher specificity level it is attached to textual description, the more cognitive domains of relatively inferior specificity level will be activated. That is to say,In adopting a broadly experientialist or empiricist approach to the construal of image-G,translators conceive semantic meaning of image-G as the imaginative projection of bodily experience onto abstract cognitive domains.Take an example from the translation of Li Bai's poem“Waiting in Vein”(李白《怨情》):[10]

美人卷珠帘,深坐蹙蛾眉。

Meiren juan zhulian,shenzuo cu emei.

Beautiful is this woman who rolls up the pearl-reed blind,(https://www.daowen.com)

She sits in an inner chamber,

And her eye brows, delicate as a moth's antennae.

(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)

The two lines depict an imagery scene of an aggrieved beauty with knitted brows who is in her inner chamber decorated with delicately beads bed hanging. From the perspective of specificity dimension, the images of zhu(pearl),shen(inner)and e(moth)can be regarded as the textual description of relatively superior specificity of image-G.They present a combined dynamic interpretation of drop curtain, sitting and brown, whose implication and undertone is aesthetically schematized in ST.By conceptualizing these images of relatively superior specificity, the translator translated the them into“pearl-reed blind”,“in an inner chamber”and“delicate as a moth's antennae”respectively in order to make them become“instantiation”and mentally accessible by means of stressing salient specificity of image-G in textual description.Xu's translation substantiates more cognitive domains of relatively inferior specificity in zhu(pearl),shen(inner)and e(moth),makes them aesthetic schematized, and renders more fine-grained and elaborated artistic conception.Summing up at this point,it seems that his conceptualization of these images of relatively superior specificity can be assumed to be explicitly represented in his translation in terms of instantiation. In addition, that degree of instantiation is determined by the specificity degree of detailed and definite textual description.
