不列颠摄取古典文明产生的意义
古典文明在不同的历史时域和具体的地理空间中诞生其自身的文化内涵与逻辑形式，并通过教堂和大学的建立体现其强大而深远的推动力。令人震撼的是，直到17世纪以后，西欧诸国依然从古典文明区域汲取营养，而且也正是由于古典文明区域的作用，西欧才可能率先建立具有近代意义的政治、经济和文化。众所周知，约翰·隆贝在意大利旅行中，模仿意大利的机器制造技术，在英国德文河的岛上建造了英国第一座工厂并形成了系统的工厂制度。(119)从此，点燃了英国通往工业文明之路的灯火，并直接使西欧率先进入工业文明时代。
由此可见，从罗马征服到多民族文明的累积，从坎特伯雷教堂建立、奥古斯丁宗教思想体系的形成到牛津大学建立逻辑学说体系和培根经验哲学思想体系的创立，均标志着古典文明以不同方式在不同的语境中实现了多种文明意义的重铸、融通与演进，从而以富有张力和生命力的多元重构的逻辑形式，成为近代文明的象征。
考察早期不列颠摄取古典文明的历史进程，从内在意义的升迁到历史空间的位移，寻找古典文明复兴的文化内涵与历史形式，不仅能使我们厘清古典文明复兴内在意义演绎的历史脉络，而且还能证明古典文明给予西欧诸国以理性哲学、伦理道德、科学技术和政治生命，让西欧诸国率先走上了民主政治、道德文明与科技崛兴的发展道路，还将呈现出一段完整的由古典文明向近代世界升迁的客观而全面的世界历史。毫无疑问，古典文明西传至不列颠，给近代英国思想与文化的发展带来深远的影响。柏拉图主义不仅给培根《工具论》等带来重要影响，(120)还给洛克的直觉理论的形成提供了重要的思想资源。(121)
不列颠13世纪前摄取的古典文明及其对于近代社会的影响，是在与其他文明的碰撞与融合的过程中完成的。以1066—1154年之间的盎格鲁–诺曼时代为例，不列颠是吸纳了中世纪欧洲诸多民族文化精粹的智慧之光。(122)不仅如此，不列颠累积了诸多不同质的民族语言与文化传统，不同质的宗教文化传统。不列颠，尤其是诺曼底，诺曼贵族依然很有尊严地参加他们当地的宗教活动，分享当地的精神英雄所具有的神力。(123)可见，欧洲早期诸多民族的异质文明、基督教文明，尤其是来自希腊与东方文明截然不同的智慧伦理，以及以公民大会、双王制、四王制和议事传统为表现形式的民主政治，还有曾经获得马克思高度赞扬的童年艺术，或许正是这些古典文明之精髓是近代英国乃至整个西方文明历史发展的动力。
不列颠在初民文化的基础上，遭遇了暴力征服及其文明的输入，又经过基督教和古典学即被人们称为“两希文明”的摄取，前者如同身躯之肉体，后者如同生命之灵魂，从而使不列颠进入生命形成的中古时代。
