The Thirteen Virtues
To help myself live without fault，I made a list of what I considered the thirteen virtues①．These virtues were:

本篇选自美国散文作家、科学家和社会活动家本杰明·富兰克林的《自传》(The Autobiography)。《自传》叙述了其家庭身世，较为详尽地描绘了他少年时代刻苦学习和勤奋工作的情景，此外还记载了他从事的公益事业、科学实验和政治活动情况。在自传中，他总结了个人奋斗的经验，充分反映了他是美国新兴资产阶级代表人物和他作为启蒙主义者的思想观点。为此，在西方，曾有许多人把富兰克林视作实现“美国之梦”(the American Dream)的楷模。
富兰克林出生于小手工业者家庭，并没有受过良好的正规教育，然而他自幼勤奋，十二岁开始当学徒，靠业余时间自学成材，实属难能可贵。他的思想品德、工作作风和处世之道很值得年轻一代学习。本篇介绍的生活十三守则更值得青年人作为座右铭。

①virtue
virtue原义是“美德”和“优点”;形容词为virtuous:
He is a man ofvirtue．/He is a virtuousman．他是个品德高尚之人。
注意 the cardinal virtues是“四种基本美德”，即: prudence(谨慎)，fortitude(坚毅)，temperance(克制)及justice(公正)。
②temperance
temperance的基本词义是“节制，克制”，是正式书面语。
She stays healthy because she practisestemperancein diet．
她能保持健康是因为她节制饮食。
Temperanceshould be applied，not only to food and drink，but to work and play．工作和玩乐如同饮食一样，都要有所节制。
注意 较常用的词为restraint。
The two parties are requested to exerciserestraintduring their discussion．双方被要求在商谈时要克制。
③silence
silence在本篇表示“沉默寡言”之意，相当于reticence: Speech is silver，silenceis golden．［谚］开口不如缄默。
注意 silence亦可用作动词，义:“使之沉默(无声或安静)”:
The arrival of the teacher silencedthe class．教师到来后，班上鸦雀无声。
④saving
saving(n)在这里表示“勤俭节约”:
From savingcomes having．［谚］富有来自节约。
注意 savings(复数)指“储蓄存款”:
Most people keep their savings in the bank．多数人把储蓄存入银行。
⑤industry
industry在这里解作“勤奋”，它的同义词是diligence。
Industryis fortune's right hand，and frugality her left．［谚］勤劳是幸运的右手;节俭是幸运的左手。
Success comes with industry．勤奋带来成就。
⑥humbleness
humbleness作“谦逊”解，是humble(adj)的名词，但现在一般用humility。反义词为pride。
People with rich knowledge deserve our profound respect and humbleness/humility．拥有丰富知识的人是值得我们深深尊敬及谦恭对待的。
When we realize how little we know，we begin to have a sense ofhumility．当人们发觉自己学识浅薄时，才会开始变得谦逊。
注意 modesty(n)/modest(adj)为同义词，但比humility更偏重于外表态度;反义词为arrogance。
Her modestybrings her success and her success does not make her lose her modesty．她的谦虚使她成功，而她的成就并没有使她失去谦逊。
