经验、知识、智慧，都是互动相生的。有了知识，需要实践;多番实践，就变成经验。累积的经验也就转化为更多知识。知识与经验的结合、累积、衍生，就成为人类的智慧、文化、文明。人们如果不能从经验中汲取知识、教训(learn from experience)，则没有成长、进步，每次做事都要重新学习(learn from scratch)，那就没有效率了。另一方面来说，我们在生命中的每项经历，不论是好是坏，都是前车之鉴，可作借镜。
关于经验之道的英语谚语甚多，这里略举数例，以见一斑:
Experience is the mother of wisdom．(智慧来自经验。)
Trouble brings experience and experience brings wisdom．(挫折带来经验，经验促进智慧。)
Experience without learning is better than learning without experience．(没有理论知识的实践经验胜过没有实践经验的理论知识。)
在日常语言运用中，我们往往不觉间用了比喻，例如说某人很有“头脑”(sb has brains);某人是好“帮手”(a helping hand);行动慢得像蜗牛(as slow as a snail);等等。比喻使语言变得生动，给人留下深刻而鲜明的印象。在修辞手法中，比喻又可分为明喻(simile)、隐喻(metaphor)、讽喻(allegory)、借喻(metonymy)、借代(synecdoche)和比拟/拟人(personification)六种。
A段的一句是用明喻，其句型为:A is like B(experience is like the stern lights of a ship)，即:本体(被比喻的人或物)和喻体(比喻的人或物)通过be like，be as，be as if等连接而成。例如:
We are now asbusy as a bee!(我们现在忙得不可开交!)
My love is likea red，red rose．(我的爱人像朵红玫瑰。)
They climbed the hill with ease as ifthey were going up the stairs．(他们爬山爬得轻松，好像是上楼梯。)

B段中，作者不是用比喻，而是直截了当地说出经验乃是错误的代名词。
