4.3　Part-of-speech Analysis

Based on the POS tagset，words are classified into different word classes.The number of each word class is counted by WordSmith Tools.Then the lexical density is calculated to observe the inform ation load in OETT and TETT.Meanwhile，log-likelihood is used to describe the relevance between them.Table 4.10 gives the details of each word class.

The similar hits of nouns and numerals in OETT and TETT indicate there is not highly significant difference between the two.OETT has more hits in proper nouns，verbs，adverbs（either lexical adverbs or functional adverbs），determiners，but TETT has more ad jectives，prepositions，auxiliary verbs，conjunctions and pronouns.Generally speaking，prepositions，conjunctions and pronouns occur more frequently in English than in Chinese.However，TETT exaggerates the grammatical features in the translation process（LL preposition－0.78，number－0.45，conjunction－0.02）.The translation hypothesis“a general tendency to exaggerate features of the target language”（Baker 1993：244）is assumed to be true and will be further verified.
