6.2 Significance of the Study

How shallwe assess a translation?A translation should be evaluated predominantly in terms of its forms and functions inside the system of the receiving culture and literature(Toury 1995)because“the end justifies themeans”(Reiss and Vermeer1984:101).As to the translation of the tourism promotional texts(from Chinese to English),the original English texts can serve as an im portant reference so that equivalence in translation can be achieved.

Under the“functional-pragmatic”model,the com parison between OETT and TETT is carried out on three levels:language/text,register(field,tenor,mode)and genre.Findings in Section 6.1 have given results of comparison on language and register level. The following table describes the overall com parison on all the three levels.

Table 6.1 shows OETT and TETT are greatly different with each other. The comparison is meaningful for practice and pedagogy. On assessment of translation, equivalence, both functional and pragmatic,is themost important criterion,so OETT should be taken as reference in translation practice and pedagogy.W hen translating the tourism promotional texts, one should commit to balancing adequacy and acceptability. On the one hand, description and evaluation towards tourist attractions are necessary;on the other hand, translators are suggested to follow the reader-centered principle, one of themost prominent features in OETT.

As to pedagogy, translation teaching should be taken as a language skill but not a professional skill.Only in thisway, students can find the optimum equivalence and balance among original texts, translated texts and target texts.
