Talking about Abilities and Inabilities

In today’s Animal Corner, we’ll talk about the senses of animals. As we know, animals use their five senses to know about their surroundings in order to ensure safety and stay alive.

Some animals have a very strong sense of sight. Most birds have their eyes fixed on either side of their head, meaning that they can see different objects at the same time. When they look straight ahead, however, they are able to focus on only one object, like human beings.

Some animals, like cats and elephants, have the ability to hear sounds that we can’t hear. Bats have developed the ability to find their way in the dark by relying on their hearing.

For other animals, the sense of smell helps them to find food and stay out of danger.A good example of an animal with an excellent sense of smell is the dog. Dogs are capable of sensing smells that originate up to 40 feet underground.

Some animals have also developed various touch organs. These organs enable them to find food or even to communicate. Snakes have an amazing sense of touch. They can feel the slightest changes in their environment.

Other animals, however, are good at tasting. For example, cows can taste about two to three times more than humans. In addition, some animals don’t taste with their tongues. Butterflies taste leaves by stepping up and down on them to find the one where they will lay their eggs.
