4.1.2 Methods for Calculating Weight 计算重量的方法

Methods for calculating weight vary for different types of commodities.

♦Gross weight 毛重

Gross weight is the total weight of the commodity plus the package weight.

♦Net weight 净重

Net weight is the weight of commodity without the package. In international trade,if the commodities are sold by weight, net weight is often implied.

♦Conditioned weight 条件重量

Conditioned weight is the weight derived by removing the moisture content of a commodity and adding a standardized amount of moisture. This method is applicable for cargoes of high economic value but unstable moisture content, such as wool, raw silk, etc. The formula for calculating the conditioned weight is:

conditioned weight = dried weight + standard moisture

♦Theoretical weight 理论重量

Commodities that have regular specifications and sizes, such as galvanized iron, tin plate and armor plate, are often eligible for theoretical weight. As long as the specifications and the sizes of such commodities are the same, their total theoretical weight can be calculated by adding up the number of the commodities.

♦Legal weight法定重量

Legal weight is the weight of merchandise per se plus that of its immediate wrapping but not that of the shipping package. The immediate wrapping could be cans, small paper boxes, small bottles, etc. This method is mainly used in some Latin American countries for the purpose of assessing import duties.
