In 1938, Fuxing Tea Factory (Kunming Tea Factory)was established. In the same year, Yunnan China Tea Trading Co., Ltd.sent Feng Shaoqiu, Fan Hejun and others to investigate the production and sales of Yunnan tea.In 1939, Fan Hejun set up Fohai Tea Factory (now Menghai Tea Factory)in Fohai(now Menghai), and introduced the construction equipment and tea-making machinery to develop tea processing. The fourth volume of Historical Accounts of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture recorded the article Memories of Founding Fohai Tea Factory by Fan Hejun, stating the method of compressed tea fermentation at that time, and introducing the fermentation days and fermentation temperature in detail.Unlike today’s microbial solid-state fermentation, the fermentation process at that time was carried out in cloth bags.According to the records of Fohai Tea Factory in Yunnan Provincial Archives, there was a fermentation chamber in the layout of Fohai Tea Factory in 1941, with an area of 18 square meters, red brick walls and asbestos tile roofs. The Overview of Fohai Tea Industry written by Mr.Li Foyi in 1939 (page 99-100, Chapter I of Historical Accounts of Menghai County)also detailed the tea making method at that time.In 1941, Kangzang Tea Factory was established (predecessor of Xiaguan Tea Factory). From War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression to the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Kangzang Tea Factory and various shops in Xiaguan bought a large number of raw tea every year for refined processing. In addition to be sold locally, the tea was also sold to Xizang,Xichang, Kunming, Chongqing, Wuhan, Shanghai and other places in China, and exported to Myanmar,India, Singapore, and other countries.
In modern times, due to wars, and drifting and miserable life of people, tea planting and processing suffered heavy losses. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, tea industry ushered in a period of recuperation and vigorous development and was rejuvenated, with tea planting area being expanded, and new tea brands being constantly emerging.
