三、状语从句
在阅读长句的时候，状语从句是树枝部分，是找到树干后，第二个层次要考虑的问题。判断从句是否为状语从句，主要看关系连词，比如since，when，if，lest等。由此可见，关系连词是状语从句的重点，状语从句的考点也是围绕它们展开的。状语从句的阅读重点主要有以下3点。
➢ 是否知道一些特殊的关系连词的意思，比如provided（如果）等。
➢ 是否知道哪些状语从句要详读，哪些要略读。
➢ 是否理解until，unless等引导的复杂状语从句的意思。

下面举一些具体例子来解析这些考点。
1.while和although引导的状语从句要略读
例句：Although Fisher wrote before the mathematical theory of games had been developed，his theory contains the essential feature of a game that the best strategy to adopt depends on what others are doing.
【句式解析】although引导的让步状语从句，重点在句子的后半句话，而前半句的让步成分很少作为出题点，故读although引导的句子时可以略读前半句话，把重心放在后面。本句话的主干为his theory contains the essential feature，that放在名词后，是递进修饰关系，修饰feature，是同位语从句。
【译文】虽然费希尔是在数学博弈理论建立起来之前发表其著作的，但他的理论已囊括了博弈的本质特征——所能采用的最佳策略取决于他人在做什么。
2.until和not until句子的区别(https://www.daowen.com)
例句：You are not in Stage 3 until your iron reserves go to zero.
Until recently，it is not easy for college students to find a job.
【句式解析】until本身的含义是动作的截止点，而not until则是开始点。
【译文】第1句话的意思是：“当你的铁储备接近0时，你才进入第3阶段。”而第2句话的意思是：“大学生现在找工作不容易。”
3.unless句式
例句：Radiation can cause serious consequence at the lowest level unless the damaged cells can reproduce themselves.
【句式解析】我们首先把unless引导的从句变成否定句：the damaged cells can not reproduce themselves，然后把unless变成if，则此句的意思为：“如果受损的细胞没有自我复制，那么最低量的辐射就会造成严重的后果。”如果我们没有这样分析句子，而直接把unless翻译为“除非”，则该句变为：“除非受损的细胞自我复制，那么最低量的辐射就会造成严重的后果。”这和原来的句意正好相反，这也是考生经常出错的地方。
【译文】如果受损的细胞不能自我复制，那么最低量的辐射就会造成严重的后果。
4.状语从句的省略
例句：While talking to you，your could-be employer is deciding whether your education，your experience，and other qualifications will pay him to employ you.
【句式解析】本句的主干为：your could-be employer is deciding whether
其中，whether引导了decide的宾语从句。宾语从句的主语是your education，your experience，and other qualifications；谓语动词是will pay，him为宾语，to employ you不定式为宾补。句子开头While引导状语从句，由于其主语就是主句主语your could-be employer（招聘人），所以将从句的主语省略，把谓语动词变为现在分词。
【译文】当招聘人在和你谈话的时候，他在判断你的教育程度、经历和其他的资质是否值得他来雇用你。
