1.1 Tourism Texts

Since her opening-up to the outside world,China has witnessed a long-term boomin tourismindustry.According to 2018 Yearbook of China Tourism Statistics, foreign visitors have increased from 230 thousand to 145.38 million in the last three decades.Of the factors contributing to the flourish of tourismindustry, tourism publicity plays a major role. And,in tourism publicity, the translation of tourism texts carries a big weight.

Tourism texts can be grouped in many ways. Some texts are monolingual, and others are bilingual.Different types of tourism texts serve for different purposes, yet only high-quality tourism texts can attract target readers'attention to a tourist attraction. However, the quality of the English versions of tourism texts has not been properly ensured in many tourism texts that are translated almost literally from Chinese to English.Literal translation often results in poor acceptability because Chinese and English are different in languages, customs and cultures. If there is no rearrangement or rew riting in translation from Chinese to English, the target readers would be kept away from the translated texts.(https://www.daowen.com)

There has been a growing interest in the translation of tourism texts(especially from Chinese to English)among translators and translation students. As has been observed, much of the study in the field is done qualitatively, and it relies heavily on the researchers'intuition and experience.A study in thatway may ignore a large part of the linguistic features characterizing tourism texts;a lot of work m ust be done for a detailed analysis of this special type of texts.

For that purpose, the author compiled a comparable corpus that collects original English tourism texts and translated English ones. This book uses a corpus-based approach, for corpus can bring forth a new perspective for the study:It allows us to gain an insight into the translators'use of language, which may not be possible in a traditional perspective.
