Qingdao uses transportation as the fundamental pivot for opening up and development, with a view to future development, seizes the long term trend, and plans to promote the construction of the port, airport, railway, metro and road. In 2021, Qingdao entered the List of Cities Accelerating the Building of International Comprehensive Transport Hubs.

Qingdao Port under Shandong Port Group expedited the building of "one bay and two wings": Dagang Port Area is transforming into an international cruise hub. With the first fully automatic container terminal in Asia completed and in operation, Qianwan Port Area has become one of China's largest container terminal clusters, opening a new era of operation with fully automatic containers. And Dongjiakou Port Area boasts a carrying capacity of over 100 million tons, with deepwater terminals including a 400,000-ton ore terminal, and a 300,000-ton/450,000-ton crude oil terminal. At present, Qingdao Port under Shandong Port Group ranks first in terms of the number and density of routes among the ports in northern China, and the cargo throughput and container throughput rank fourth and sixth in the world respectively.

Qingdao Jiaodong Airport, a 4F airport (the highest grade), will be able to transport 35 million passengers in 2025 and 55 million in 2045. Its shipping route network has covered the whole world. With the airport, high-speed railways and expressways, the whole city is reachable in one hour and all other major cities in Shandong are reachable in two hours.

Qingdao is an important railway hub on the coast of China. By the end of 2021, the total railway mileage in Qingdao reached 666 kilometers. A highly effcient hub-andspoke network connecting to north, west and south has taken shape with three main railway stations, i.e. Qingdao Railway Station, Qingdao North Railway Station and Hongdao Railway Station, supplemented by Qingdao West Railway Station.

Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 37 kilometers, the longest oversea bridge in north China. Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Tunnel is the undersea tunnel in the world with the shallowest placing depth, and the largest cross section. Construction of the second undersea tunnel was started in 2020. It will be the world's longest undersea road tunnel upon completion.

Qingdao is a national road transport hub. By the end of 2021, the total length of highway in service in Qingdao reached 15,365.3 km. There are 16 expressways with a total length of 869.2 km. All townships are within a 30-minute drive to the nearest expressway tolling station. A one-hour economic circle has been created in Qingdao.

By the end of 2021, six metro lines are in service, namely, Line 3, Line 2 (Phase 1), Line 11, Line 13, Line 1 and Line 8 (northern section). The total length in service is about 284.3 kilometers. There are 128 metro stations in operation with seven interchange stations. A subway network crisscrossing the city is taking shape.
