3.4 Sociocultural Theory on Individual Development
The sociocultural theory perspective on the context, individual development, and identity can be a complementary level of analysis in this study for better understanding the complexity of disciplinary identities construction in relation to developmental disciplinary experience in context. It has been discussed in Section 2.3.3.2 that three themes (i.e., the semiotic nature of human action in the individual and the social dimensions, originality of individual development in social sources, and the genetic/developmental/historical analysis of the first two themes) in sociocultural theory help conceptualise the interdependence of social development and individual development.Analytically, they can be interpreted via other two concepts in the theory, that is, communities of practice and belonging.
