Summary Writing Techniques
A summary is a short account of a longer or detailed essay,a shortened version of the original,which highlights the major points and shows the writer’s point of view.It tends to help readers get the gist of an essay.The process of writing a summary is as follows:
1)Read the text to find out the main ideas;
2)Outline the structure of the passage;
3)Underline important ideas while rejecting minor details;
4)Provide an accurate and objective account of the text,leaving out your reaction to it;
5)Organize the main ideas in your own words,but do not include your own opinions;
6)Check that your summary reflects the original conclusion;
7)Write the summary in the third person;
8)Describe it in the present tense;
9)You may start by “The passage discusses / introduces…”,or “According to the passage…”.
