Morality is indispensable in market economy

Morality is indispensable in market economy

Market economy not only has a considerable degree of morality objectively, but also inherently needs morality to maintain its sustainability. The premise of market is division of labor, there is division of labor and then there is exchange. Therefore, the market is regarded as a process. The division of labor and exchange determine the market economy as a process, which can not be a cooperative economy in essence. Here, the connotation of cooperation is that in order to pursue their own interests, they have to satisfy the interests of others at the same time. This characteristic determines the market as a long-term process, where there must be some order observed by all people, the essence of this order is to find and maintain a balance between personal interests and the interests of others.Consequently, deliberate economists have to pay attention to order because they focus on process.

Because the market is realized in the transaction, the market economy can only be realized in the interaction between people and people all the time. Therefore,as an economic form, its long-term existence can only be achieved through continuous exchanges, transactions and exchanges. And the exchange of such material products is bound to be related to the mutual trust between the exchange objects.Once this trust is broken, the transactions, exchanges, and individual economic activities will cease. In this sense, market economy needs morality in particular, because it is not a one-off activity, but a continuous activity, and what makes continuous existence is the moral judgment of the other side besides the economic interest itself.

Modern economics often abstracts the relationship between man and man in the process of modelling and mathematics of economic movement, thus abstracting the moral content in the process. They only emphasize one aspect of Adam Smith ’s thought and drown out the other.Compared with the wisdom and understanding of the ancients, this is a kind of degeneration, which is also a one-sided interpretation of the market. In ancient China, there was a deep commercial morality, and its motto was“no deception for children and elders”.“Children” and “elders” represent the weak in society. It emphasizes that neither the weak can be deceived, let alone the equal object. Therefore,Westerners who came to China to do business after the middle of the nineteenth century were most impressed by the sincerity of Chinese businessmen. Many records at that time have said commercial promises which cannot be guaranteed by law and contract in Western Europe can often be guaranteed by oral promises in China. From this point of view,Confucianism ’s enlightenment into the business process has become the moral tradition of Chinese business. The reason why Confucian morality can be integrated into the market process has been that the market itself also needs morality to maintain.Corresponding to Adam Smith ’s thought of linking economics and ethics,Chinese history actually provides an example.

These analyses show that market economy has a moral aspect,so there is not necessarily antagonism and incompatibility between market economy and morality. However,as a specific historical process,China ’s current market economy is transformed from the long-standing planned economy, which has been realized in the social transformation brought about by the reform and opening up in the past 40 years.Social transformation has provided vigor for development by means of great changes, and also by means of great changes,it has brought about a variety of variations, and thus decomposes all kinds of original stable things. For the issues we are discussing, these are not only concrete impacts, but also historical circumstances. Therefore, after the general academic narrative,we can not but put the problem into the social transformation to examine.
