*Dongguan Multi-Angles Lantern

*Dongguan Multi-Angles Lantern

Nominating Unit: City of Dongguan

Multi-Angles Lanterns are gems of Dongguan local handicraft art, which was exclusively owned by the Zhao family in Dongguan, descendent of the song royal family. It is said that there were 24 pieces of colored decorative ribbons when the Zhao family began to make Multi-Angles Lanterns in the Yuan Dynasty. They only made the lanterns once every ten years. Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Multi-Angles Lanterns were once exhibited in Pufan ancestral hall (the ancestral hall of the Zhao family in Xieyuan fang). Although the lanterns were made every ten years, the decorative ribbons were artifacts of the Song Dynasty. They had been cherished by the Zhao family until they were destroyed in 1960s.

After a 40-year break of the craft, the making of Muiti-Angles Lantern gains restoration. Now the chief successor has spent 8 months making a Muiti-Angles Lantern with the support of Guancheng government.(https://www.daowen.com)

Dongguan Muiti-Angles Lantern was selected into the list of the first batch of state-level intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
