在英语谚语中，有一条是:Life is short and time is swift．(生命短，光阴促。)
它与中国的谚语“光阴如箭，日月如梭”说的是同一个意思，即光阴可贵，生命短促，人生在世要勤奋工作，人生的目的并非为了吃喝玩乐(Life is not all beer and skittles)，布兰代斯、蒙田、达·芬奇和爱因斯坦在这里用精辟的话语从不同的角度反映了他们对生活、人生价值和处世态度的见解，给人们提供了借鉴。
描述生命短促、事物短暂，转瞬即逝，除了用short外，常见的还有transient及transitory。反义词为lasting(持久的)及everlasting(永恒的)。例如:

用作形容词时，enough可放在它所修饰的名词的前面或后面。

用作形容词时，enough，adequate和sufficient同义，一般说来，sufficient和adequate比enough更为正式(formal)。
