This chapter serves to build up a clear picture of what has been done by previous studies on identity and identity construction, academic interaction and advising. Section 2.1 briefly reviews the studies on identity and its construction, including the ways these are defined in previous studies,followed by the definitions for the purposes of this study, classifications of identity and the pragmatic approach to identity and its construction. Section 2.2 reviews the studies on identity construction in both spoken and written academic interaction. Section 2.3 provides a systematic look at the studies on advising, including advising as a speech act, advising as a problem-solving activity and identity construction in advising. Section 2.4 summarizes the existing studies and identifies the research gaps emerging from the literature review.
