Chapter Three Identity Construction as Pragmatic Adaptation

This chapter attempts to establish a theoretical framework to analyze and interpret identity construction in the process of advice-giving in spoken academic interaction. In Section 3.1, the theoretical background of this study is introduced, including the Community of Practice, the principles of links between speech acts and identities proposed by Tracy (2002) and the Linguistic Adaptation Theory (Verschueren, 1999), which is the focus of the present study. In Section 3.2, a working analytical framework for the present study will be established, which encompasses four dimensions: identity construction as a means of satisfying communicative needs, identity construction as a process of making choices, identity construction as a dynamic process and identity construction as an adaption to contextual correlates. Section 3.3 serves to be a summary of this chapter.
