Chapter 3 Theoretical Framework
Chapter 2 has presented a general review of the previous researches of authorial stance and CMs.These studies make great contributions to the current investigation but still need more and deeper analysis. On the one hand, combining the merits and deficiencies of the previous researches of the linguistic concepts, the term authorial stance is employed as the umbrella term for the authors’epistemic and attitudinal judgements and opinions during the interaction between the authors and the readers. On the other hand, the previous researches mainly focus on the cohesive function of the CMs and undervalue their roles in negotiating claims.Considering this drawback,Chapter 3 will take the argument one step further and develop an analyzing model to study how CMs could help construe authorial stance.
