Chapter 4 The Overall Features of CMs
In Chapter 3,the study firstly investigates the whole theoretical framework of the dissertation and proposes a new classification of CMs,mainly by introducing related concepts and notions such as metafunctions, stratification, realization, grammatical mataphor, expansive clause complexes, some influencing factors of disciplinary differences and linguistic-cultural differences.Chapter 4 and the following two chapters are comparatively more empirical. This chapter deals with the overall features of various types of CMs.
Specifically, the discussion is organized in three sections. The first section is based on the interpretation of CMFEs and its seven subtypes. The second section is concerned with CMCEs and its six subcategories. The third section is about the interpretation of various semantic types of the CM and. There are several steps to organize these three sections respectively. In the first and second sections, the typical lexicogrammatical realizations of various types of CMFEs and CMCEs and their sub-categories are listed. Then the occurrences and frequencies of these realizations in the chosen data are accounted and compared, and examples of the high-frequency CMs are set. Finally the results are analyzed to show how these similarities or differences contribute to construe authorial stance. In the third section, the CM and has various types of semantic configurations. For one thing, the various semantic roles of and are summarized, and then accounted and compared;for another, the reasons of the similarities and differences are analyzed briefly.
