Foreword

“Songjiang prefecture proceeded modern-day Shanghai.” As the origin of ancient Shanghai culture, Songjiang is proud of its long history and rich cultural traditions. With a thriving economy, a flourishing culture and a large population, it was among the most important prefectural cities south of the Yangtze River during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. After 1000 years, its rich cultural relics have both witnessed Shanghai's urban development while also exemplifying the local architectural heritage.

This book tells the “History of Development in Songjiang” in a concise and accessible way by vividly chronicling the historical buildings and most emblematic modern buildings. These ancient walls, trees, pagodas, rivers, alleys and buildings help us better understand the evolution and changes of the city while experiencing the traditional architectural culture of Shanghai. Each building offers us unique stories and fragments of history. Everyday life and historical events are inseparable from the architecture in which they occur. Throughout the ages, architecture has witnessed prosperity and decline and represents the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Songjiang. Several religious buildings are of particular interest: Dharani Steles, the earliest existing ground structure in Shanghai area; the Square Tower from the Song dynasty; the Songjiang Mosque built during the Yuan dynasty. All these ancient buildings work harmoniously together to enrich the city.

The author is a city planner who has been engaged in urban planning in Songjiang for many years. She daily devotes herself to studying the ongoing development and shifts within Songjiang. This book can be a reference book for understanding the development of Songjiang and a pocket guide for curious travelers in the area as well. I believe this book will make a positive and beneficial contribution to the promotion of Songjiang's historical and cultural resources and the publicity of Shanghai's unique history and vibrant culture!
