Fei Hua's Residence

Fei Hua's Residence is an imposing group of houses built during the Guangxu era of the Qing dynasty (1875—1908). Covering about 1,124 square meters, it measures 21 meters wide and 53 meters long.
It is a typical of the civilian residential housing of the Qing dynasty, facing south and with a broad and open courtyard placed between Ma Tau Walls. Originally the structure included seven halls. Currently only five of the rooms remain including the front lobby, the main hall, and the residential building, while other parts were torn down during expansions of the West Zhongshan Road in the 1930s. The courtyard is symmetric with porches on both sides. Inside the lobby, facing the street is the grand and exquisite formal entrance on the sides of which stand two drum-shaped bearing stones. Corridors lead away from the main hall outside. The columns rest on inverted basin-shaped foundations which are decorated with fans, flowers, plants, and various scenery.
Behind this main structure are the bedroom, dining room, and kitchen. When standing on the second floor and gazing out into the courtyard, visitors might imagine a scene with a young lady accompanied by a maidservant, enjoying the caress of the spring breeze and the sound of rain falling on Japanese banana leaves.
The Feis originally resided in Yexie Town of Songjiang and occupied wealthy properties there before later relocating to Songjiang city. Fei Hua (1911—1984), famous even during modern times once attained a civil engineering master's degree from Cornell University in the US before returning to China at the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in 1937.
At present, Fei Hua's Residence has been completely renovated and serves as the workplace for the Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Academy.
