Shi Liangcai's Residence
Shi Liangcai (1880—1934) from Jiangning County, Jiangsu Province, lost his mother at the age of seven, and later moved to Sijing with his father Shi Chunfan who managed the Shitaihetang Chinese Medicine store there. The child Shi was taught by a local teacher, Dai Kuichen and showed early promise as a writer and poet. In 1899, because of his excellent poetry and literary talent, the 19-year-old Shi won the ninth place in the entry-level imperial examination and was awarded a Xiucai title. In 1901, he was admitted to the College of Sericology in Hangzhou and returned to Shanghai after graduation. In 1904, he established a school for women in Shanghai. In 1912, Shi took over the Shun Pao (lit.Shanghai News) which started the first publication in Shanghai in 1872 and closed in 1949 with the distinction of having begun China's modern newspaper industry and as the longest-running newspaper in modern China. Under Shi's charge, 7,000 copies were sold daily, and the sales volume reached 150,000 during its peak, having far-reaching influence. After the Mukden Incident in 1931, Shi advocated fighting against Japan to save the country and assailed the Kuomintang government many times. On November 13, 1934, he was assassinated on his way back from Hangzhou to Shanghai.
The Mingde Hall located in Xiatang region in Sijing Town is the former residence of Shi Liangcai. Construction began in the autumn of 1916 and was completed in the spring of 1918. The mansion was named after his wife, Pang Mingde to show his gratitude. Mingde Hall covers about 1,000 square meters among which about 800 square meters is the building itself. Here, the hall received many celebrities and patriots such as Yu Dafu and Tao Xingzhi. After Shi passed away, Mrs. Shi stayed in this house, chanting sutras for the death. In the early days of the P.R.C., the building was used as the government of Songjiang County and later that of Sijing Town. After its renovation in 2006, the residence opened to the public as Shi Liangcai's house museum.
At present, the screen wall, the front hall, the etiquette door, and the second floor's corridor are open to the public. Mr. Shi's bust is placed on the black marble pedestal in the center of the front hall and his biography is displayed nearby. Going north through the front hall, the Shikumen is the brick carving etiquette door. The north of the courtyard houses a two-story wooden building which combines Chinese and Western styles with cast-iron railings on the second floor decorated with western-style patterns and wooden columns engraved in a European style. Patterns of glass in red, blue, and green are applied to wooden windows and doors, reflecting the style during the Republic of China.
