Sheshan Observatory

The famous Sheshan Observatory is a white building done in a typically French architectural style and rests on West Sheshan.

Founded in 1899 (Qing) by a French missionary, the observatory has witnessed the development of modern astronomy in Shanghai and is now listed as a municipal cultural heritage site in Shanghai. In 2004, the Shanghai Astronomical Museum was established here and has since become a popular destination for science education and exhibits.

Tthe observatory boasts the earliest large astronomical telescope in China—the 40-cm binocular telescope purchased in Paris in 1898, which was the largest astronomical telescope in Asia at the time. The telescope is housed under a spherical skylight which can be opened manually while in use. More than 7,000 important astronomical photographs have been taken over the past 100 years, contributing to numerous valuable scientific research, such as the observation of the solar eclipse in 1907 and Halley's comet in 1910 and 1986.

The museum contains exhibition areas including the Star Tour Hall, the Telescope, the Centennial Telescope, the Centennial Observatory, and the Sun Observation Center. The park also contains the highest natural point in Shanghai, the "Peak of Sheshan Mountain" (at an altitude of 100.4 meters), and a monument to the International Longitude Determination during 1926—1957.
