Zuibaichi Park

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, numerous residences and gardens of celebrities and nobles lay around Songjiang, many of whom were famous painters and poets. They are passionate about nature, seeking, in their own ways, elegant and poetic lives. As a representative of traditional garden designs in Songjiang, Zuibaichi Park remains extremely valuable to the broader community.

Covering about 5 hectares, Zuibaichi Park is one of the most famous gardens in Shanghai. The park was originally on the site of the private residence of Zhu Zhichun, a Jinshi (graduate of the highest degree in ancient China) of Huating in the Northern Song dynasty. During the late Ming dynasty, it became the private garden of Dong Qichang, a famous calligrapher and minister, who presided over the construction of the Simian Hall and the boat-shaped lakeside pavilion. During the Kangxi era of the Qing dynasty, the property was purchased by Gu Dashen, the chief of the Ministry of Works. After several rounds of renovation, it grew into a model classic garden in Songjiang. The center is a 700-square-meter rectangular pool surrounded on three sides by pavilions and colonnades as well as bamboo, plum trees, rockeries, and captivating stones. Because the owner admired the works of poet Bai Juyi's, he named the garden Zuibaichi (lit.the pond of being drunk with Bai).

Zuibaichi Park was expanded and opened to the public in 1959. It contains two parts: the original Zuibaichi serves as the inner garden with the expanded portions surrounding it. The inner garden maintains the traditional style of Chinese classical gardens with the existing Simian Hall, Letian Pavilion, the Yi boat-shaped pavilion, Xuehai Hall, Baocheng Building, Chishang Cottage, and other ancient buildings. As a work of architectural ingenuity, garden art and general aesthetic grandeur, the land and structures are of extraordinarily highly cultural value. The details and design including the roof top grotesques, ornate doorways, hand-carved windows and delicately adorned beams, gravel-paved paths, rockeries and stela corridors are often appreciated and imitated.

The Chishang Cottage was constructed in 1909 (Qing). Standing beside the pool, the cottage is surrounded by screens and decorated with corridors, windowed verandas, noble trees and rockeries. The inscribed board under the roof was provided by Mr. Cheng Shifa, a famous painter in Songjiang.

In addition to ancient buildings, there are many precious cultural relics, such as the stone carvings and stelae. Many rare plants also grow in the garden. The ancient ginkgoes have been there for three or four hundred years and the ancient camphor trees and the peonies for more than 100.
