Ma Xiangbo's Residence

Mr. Liu Yazi once praised him as “a living history”. In 1903, at the age of 63, he donated all his real estate in Songjiang and Qingpu to found the Aurora College before he established Fudan University two years later. In 1912, the Republic of China was established when Ma was 72 years old. By Sun Yat-sen's invitation, he became the first mayor of Nanjing Municipality. Into his 90s, he traveled around with a cane and called on the whole people to fight against Japan's invasion and save the country, making him a pioneer in the cultural and educational circles in Shanghai and beyond.

The residence is located on the Middle Kaijiang Road in Xiatang Historical and Cultural Reserve, Sijing Town. Facing south, this two-story building was constructed in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and is now partly open to the public. Behind the front hall and the courtyard sits the main hall, where exhibitions are held. The northern second courtyard leads to the back hall, a solum space with ornately carved wooden architraves. Above the partition hangs a plaque commemorating Sheng De Tang, a gift from Ma's friend Zhang Bingyi, a calligrapher and the township head of Qibao. Ma makes earnest efforts to promote public interests and once took part in the dredging of the rivers Sijingtang and Puhuitang, for which the workers were well compensated. During his more relaxed moments in the spring and autumn, Ma would live here, contenting to the social and convivial atmosphere for which it was widely known.

In order to commemorate Ma Xiangbo, in November 2002 the residence was renovated and opened to the public.
