Songjiang No.2 High School

Formally the site for the government of Songjiang Prefecture, the land is the only witness to its history. The school was founded in 1904 and originally named “Songjiang Middle School”. Following the Revolution of 1911, it was renamed “Jiangsu Provincial Middle School”. In November 1959, Songjiang was transferred to Shanghai, and the school was renamed the “Second Middle School of Songjiang County of Shanghai”. In 1998, it was officially listed as “Shanghai Songjiang No. 2 High School”.

Nowadays, in this garden-like campus, lawns, rivers, bridges, and buildings are all hidden away in the shadow of majestic trees. With cultural relics such as the foundation of the Great Gateway of Yunjian, the court of Shuren (lit. nurturing students), the buildings of Wuyi (lit. May first), Wusi (lit. May fourth), Liuyi (lit. June first) as well as the Dugongci Bridge, the campus is rich in its strong historical and cultural atmosphere.

The Great Gateway of Yunjian's elevated base has been said to be the site where the General Zhou Yu gathered his armies. In 1295 (Yuan), the watchtower of Songjiang Government was constructed on top of this foundation. After that, it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, mostly due to warfare. During the Daoguang period of the Qing dynasty, it was first known as “the Great Gateway of Yunjian”. The current building was designed and reconstructed by the Architectural Design Institute of Fudan University in 2001, according to historical documents. It is a five-bay building about 16 meters high and 25 meters wide and with a hip-and-gable roof. Currently, the structure serves as the front gate of the school. The Chinese characters “Yunjian Di-yi Lou” were inscribed on the gate by Cheng Shifa, a famous traditional painter of Songjiang.

Shuren Court was built in 1937 as the main teaching building, and is now located in the south of the school. It has a sloped roof, plain brick wall, elegant facade, geometric pattern decoration, and “Shuren Yuan” inscribed with grey characters on a black background. The 3-story building contains a bifurcated classroom of two symmetric rows and measures 3.4 meters high, 40.8 meters long and 10.9 meters wide. Shuren Court is a rare structure that has witnessed the full stretch of Sonjiang's educational history and development.

Buildings Wu-yi, Wu-si, and Liu-yi were constructed during 1951—1954. The two-story buildings are in a veranda style with plain brick wall and hip-and-gable roofs measuring 52 meters long, 10 meters wide and 4 meters high. They served as teaching buildings for the Jiangsu Provincial Middle School and represent an important step forward for the educational development of Songjiang after 1949.

Dugongci Bridge was constructed during the Ming dynasty in the backyard garden of the yamen of Songjiang Prefecture but now is located on a small pool of the school. Its structure is similar to that of the Wangxian Bridge in Square Pagoda Park. It is a flat, three-span stone bridge measuring 2.87 meters wide and 8.55 meters long, with bas-reliefs of flowers on the pier and the beams.
