Passage 1

Women may be more susceptible to the lung damaging effects of smoking than men, according to new research by Inga-Cecilie Soerheim,M.D.,and her colleagues from Channing Laboratory,Brigham and Women’s Hospital and University of Bergen,Norway. They analyzed data from a Norwegian case-control study including 954 subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)and 955 controls. All were current-or ex-smokers,and the COPD subjects had moderate or severe COPD.

“Overall our analysis indicated that women may be more vulnerable to the effects of smoking, which is something previously suspected but not proven,”said Dr.Soerheim.

The study results will be presented on May 18 at the 105th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society in San Diego.

Examining the total study sample, there were no gender differences with respect to lung function(FEV1)and COPD severity, but the women were on average younger and had smoked significantly less than men.

To explore these differences further, they also analyzed two subgroups of the study sample:COPD subjects under the age of 60(early onset group)and COPD subjects with less than 20 pack-years of smoking(low exposure group). In both subgroups, women had more severe disease and greater impairment of lung function than men.

“This means that female smokers in our study experienced reduced lung function at a lower level of smoking exposure and at an earlier age than men,”said Dr.Soerheim.

It has long been suspected that the effect of smoking on lung function may be modified by gender.Interaction analysis confirmed that being female represents a higher risk of reduced lung function and severe COPD,but this gender effect was most pronounced when the level of smoking exposure was low.

“The gender difference in COPD susceptibility seems to be most important when smoking exposure is low.Women may tolerate small amounts of tobacco worse than men,”Dr.Soerheim explained.

According to Dr.Soerheim, the reason why women may be more susceptible to the effects of cigarette smoke is still unknown, but there are several possible explanations:“Women have smaller airways;therefore each cigarette may do more harm. Also, there are gender differences in the metabolism of cigarette smoke.Genes and hormones could also be important.”

Questions 21-25 are based on the passage you have just heard.

21.What is the most likely topic of this talk?

22.How many subjects did Dr.Soerheim recruit in his study?

23.When and where will Dr.Soerheim present their study results?

24.According to the talk, when is the gender difference most likely to be obvious in COPD susceptibility?

25.Which of the following is not an explanation for women’s great susceptibility to the effects of smoking?

Passage 2

IN DECEMBER 1997 large numbers of cattle, goats and sheep began dying in the Garissa district of north-eastern Kenya.A month later people started dying, too. It was,at the time, the biggest recorded outbreak of Rift Valley fever in east Africa. Some 100,000 stock animals succumbed and about 90,000 people were infected—hundreds fatally—in five countries.

In December 2007 the same thing happened.Or,rather,it started to happen but was stopped in its tracks. The difference was that the second time around there was warning. In September researchers at the Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt,Maryland, part of America’s space agency,NASA,told the authorities in Kenya that they had a problem. They told them again in October. And again in November.By the time the epidemic emerged, the Kenyan health ministry had dispatched teams to the area to distribute mosquito nets and urge village leaders and religious authorities to stop people slaughtering and eating animals.Though the outbreak still killed 300 people in Kenya,Somalia and Tanzania,it could have been a lot worse.According to Kenneth Linthicum of America’s Department of Agriculture, the number of deaths would probably have been more than twice as high without the warning.

The warning itself was possible because of a model of how disease spreads that Dr Linthicum helped design. And the data that were plugged into that model came from satellites.

What the researchers at Goddard had noticed at the time of the first outbreak was that in the months preceding it,surface temperatures in the equatorial part of the Indian Ocean had risen by half a degree. These higher temperatures brought heavy and sustained rains, cloud cover and warmer air to much of the Horn of Africa.Mosquitoes multiplied wildly—and lived long enough for the virus that causes the fever to develop to the point where it is easily transmissible. In September 2007 the researchers saw the same thing happening in the ocean, and suspected the same consequences would follow.

Questions 26-30 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26.How many stock animals died as a result of the outbreak of the Rift Valley fever in 1997?

27.What helped stop the outbreak of the Rift Valley fever in 2007?

28.Which of the following is not mentioned as a measure to prevent the 2007 outbreak from spreading?

29.What triggered the two outbreaks of the Rift Valley fever in Africa?

30.What is the talk mainly about?

Long Conversation

W:Hello doctor Smith, welcome to our program“Health Journey”.Could you tell us something about swine flu.

M:Well,it’s a common respiratory ailment in pigs that doesn’t usually spread to people.

W:But why are so many people infected?

M:Unlike most cases, this flu virus appears to be a sub-type not seen before in humans or pigs.It has genetic material from pigs, birds and humans, according to the WHO.

W:Then why is it called swine flu?Why pigs are the carriers of this virus?

M:Um.It’s closer to say that pigs were the mixing balls for this virus.

W:What does it mean?

M:I mean birds cannot pass bird flu to people. But pigs are susceptible to getting flu viruses that infected birds. The virus inside the infected pig might mutate to a form that could also infect other mammals.

W:Wow,so complicated.By the way,can we catch swine flu from eating pork?

M:Actually, ill pigs are not allowed to enter the market.Cooking also kills the virus.Only people who work with pigs can catch the virus.

W:How do they feel if infected?

M:The most common symptoms are fever, fatigue, lack of appetite and coughing, although some people also develop runny nose, sore throat, vomiting or diarrhea.

W:What should we do if we have these symptoms?

M:Stay home from work or school.Don’t get on a plane.Call your doctors to ask about the best treatment.Don’t simply show up at the clinic or hospital that is unprepared for your arrival.

W:Say,the antiviral study. How is it going?

M:This strain of swine flu does appear sensitive to the antiviral drugs Relenza and Tami flu,but not to Amantadine and Remantadine.

W:We’ve learned a lot tonight.Thanks for your coming,doctor Smith.

M:It’s my pleasure.

Passage One

Questions 21-25 are based on the following passage.

About 10 million people in the U.S.alone,from troops returning from war to students with music blasting through headphones are suffering from impairing noise-induced hearing loss. The rise in trend is something that researchers and physicians at the University of Michigan Cresgo Hearing Research Institute are hoping to reverse, with the cocktail of vitamins and the mineral magnesium(镁)that shall promise as a possible way to prevent hearing loss caused by loud noise. The nutrients were successful in laboratory tests. And now researchers are testing whether humans will benefit as well. The combination of vitamins A,C and E plus magnesium is given on pill form to patients who are participating in the research.Developed at the UM Cresgo Hearing Research Institute, the medication, called Oral Quell,is designed to be taken before a person is exposed to the loud noise.Until a decade ago,it was thought that noise damaged hearing by intense mechanical vibrations that destroyed delicate structures of the inner ear. There was no intervention to protect the inner ear other than reducing the intensity of sound reaching it,such as ear plugs which are not always effective. It was then discovered that noise caused intense metabolic activity in the inner ear and production of molecules that damage the inner ear cells. And that allows the discovery of intervention to prevent these effects. The laboratory research that led to a new understanding of mechanisms underlying noise-induced hearing loss was funded by NIH,the Preclinical Translation Research that led to the formulation of Oral Quell as effective preventative was funded by General Motors and the United Auto Workers. Now Oral Quell is being tested in a set of four multinational human clinical trials:military trials in Sweden and Spain, and industrial trials in Spain and the trial involving students at the University of Florida who listen to music at high volumes on their iPods and other PDAs.

Questions:

21.According to the talk, how many victims of hearing problem are there in the United States alone?

22.Which did UM Cresgo Hearing Research Institute develop to prevent hearing loss?

23.According to the latest findings, what does loud noise damage?

24.According to the talk, who supported the lab research?

25.Which of the following is not included as the multinational human clinical trials for Oral Quell?

Passage Two

Questions 26-30 are based on the following passage.

Catherine and other colleagues from Britain’s New Castle University combined data from 18 studies to look at the risk of abnormalities of babies whose mothers were obese or overweight.Obese women were nearly twice as likely to have a baby with neural tube defects which are caused by the incomplete development of the brain or spinal cord, the study found. For one such defect, spinal bifida(脊柱裂),the risk more than doubled. The researchers also detected increased chances of heart defect, cleft lip and palate, water on the brain(脑积水)and problems in the growth of arms and legs. The World Health Organization classifies around 400 million people around the world as obese, including 20 million under the age of 5,and the number is growing.Obesity raises the risks of diseases such as type Ⅱ.diabetes, heart problems and is a health concern piling pressure on an already overburdened national health system.Recent research has tight weight to other problems during pregnancy.A team from the Round Corporation Think Tank in California reported in 2008 that women who get pregnant after weight loss surgery tend to be healthier and less likely to deliver a baby born with complications compared to obese women.Further study may show how obesity may cause these problems,Juliet at New Castle University researcher who worked on the study said in a telephone interview.Women who are thinking about trying for a baby need to check their own weight first, and then think about seeking help if they are overweight.

Questions:

26.What is the talk mainly about?

27.Babies whose mothers are obese may have increased chances of the following diseases except?

28.According to the WHO,how many people are classified as obese around the world?

29.Which of the following can be a suggestion for obese women who plan to have a baby?

30.According to the talk, what may be the focus of further studies?

A lot of doctors can tell what’s wrong with you by sleeping, and I can do this by smelling. This actually goes back to the day of ancient Greece. For example, you can walk into a room or get close to a patient who had diabetes that is not well controlled. There is a kind of sweetish smell. That means I can walk into a room and tell if a patient has kidney failure or liver failure. And now there is a machine that can do that too.It is fascinating that there have been these machines in the past, but they were just enormous. These machines are impossible to use clinically, because, you know,in a whole room for the equipments. So in the past, they were not used in therapy. But the newly-invented ones are very small and concise. They use new laser technology and now available given the size of the machine.Unlike the previous, they are just of the size of microwave. However, they are very much in the experimental stage.Interesting.unlike any of these things which are produced by commercial company, this work is being done by the federal government.

Here’s a dreamy weight-loss plan:take a nap. That’s the message from work by Sanjay Patel at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland,Ohio. His study of more than 68,000 women has found that those who sleep less than 5 hours a night gain more weight over time than those who sleep 7 hours a night.

Controlling for other differences between the groups,Patel found that women who slept 5 hours or less gained 0.7 kilograms more on average over 10 years than 7-hour sleepers. The short-sleeping group was also 32 per cent more likely to have gained 15 kilograms or more, and 15 percent more likely to have become obese.

Significantly, the short-sleepers consumed fewer calories than those who slept 7 hours, says Patel, who presented his results this week at the American Thoracic Society International Conference in San Diego,California. This finding overturns the common view that overeating among the sleep-deprived explains such weight differences.

Lower metabolic rate resulting from less sleep may be the reason behind the weight gain,Patel suggests.“It obviously also suggests that getting people to sleep more might be a relatively easy way to help people lose weight,”he says.

Questions:

26.What did the Patel’s study indicate?

27.How many subjects did Patel have in his study?

28.According to the Patel’s study, which of the following is not true?

29.According to Patel, what might be the reason behind the weight differences?

Stephen Hawking

Life on other planet is likely, but intelligent life is less likely.Famed astrophysicist,Stephen Hawking has been thinking a lot about the cosmic question:Are we alone?“The answer is probably not,”he says.“If there is life elsewhere in the universe,”Hawking says,“why haven’t we stumbled onto some alien broadcasts in space?Maybe something like ‘alien quiz show’?”Hawking’s comments were part of the lecture at George Washington University on Monday in honor of NASA’s 50th anniversary. He theorized that there are possible answers to whether there is extraterrestrial life. One option is that there likely isn’t any life elsewhere or maybe there is intelligent life elsewhere. But when it gets smart enough to send signals into space,it’s also smart enough to make destructive nuclear weapons.Hawking said he prefers the third opinion,“Primitive life is very common, and intelligent life is fairly rare.”He then quickly added:“Some would say it has yet to occur on earth.”So should you worry about aliens?Alien abduction claims come from the“weirdos”and are unlikely. However, because alien life might not have DNA like us,Hawking warned,“Watch out if you would meet an alien. You could be infected with a disease to which you have no resistance.”The 66-year-old British cosmologist who suffers from ALS and must speak through a mechanical device believes if the human race is to continue for another million years,we would have to boldly go where no one has gone before.Hawking compared people who don’t want to spend money on human space exploration to those who opposed to the journey of Christopher Columbus in 1492.“The discovery of the new world made a difference to the old.Just think we won’t have had a Big Mac or KFC.”

Obesity Contributes to Global Warming Too

Obese and overweight people require more fuel to transport them, and the problem will worsen as the population grows,a team at the London School of Hygiene&Tropical Medicine says.

This adds to the food shortage and higher energy prices, the school’s researchers wrote in the journal Lancet on Friday.

At least 400 million adults worldwide are obese. The World Health Organization (WHO)projects by 2015,2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million will be obese.

In their model, the researchers pegged 40 percent of the global population as obese with a body mass index of near 30.Many nations are fast approaching or have surpassed this level.

BMI is a calculation of height to weight, and the normal range is usually considered to be 18 to 25,with more than 25 considered overweight and above 30 obese.

The researchers found that obese people require 1,680 daily calories to sustain normal energy and another 1,280 calories to maintain daily activities,18 percent more than someone with a stable BMI.

Because thinner people eat less and are more likely to walk than rely on cars,a slimmer population would lower demand for fuel for transportation and for agriculture.

This is also very important because 20 percent of greenhouse gas emission stem from agriculture.

The next step is quantifying how much a heavier population is contributing to climate change, higher fuel prices and food shortage.

“Promotion of a normal distribution of BMI would reduce the global demand for,and thus the price of,food,”Edwards and Roberts wrote.

Questions:

36.Which of the following can best describe the main idea of the talk?

38.According to WHO,by 2015,what would be the estimated figure of the global obese population?

39.According to the researchers, how much energy would an obese person need for a day?

40.According to Edwards and Roberts, what would happen if we promote a normal distribution of BMI?

For years researchers have debated whether smoking effects the lungs in men and women differently. In a most compelling study on the topic to date, researchers determined that women are twice as vulnerable to lung cancer as men.But in a surprising twist, they die at half the rate of men.

The study, which was published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, included 9,427 men and 7,498 women from throughout North America who were healthy,at least 40 years old and either current or former smokers.Over the course of more than eight years,a group of investigation led by Dr.Claudia Henschke of the Weill Medical College in New York City identified lung tumors in 113 of the men and 156 of the women. Then the researchers kept track of who lived and for how long,as well as the treatment participants were given. The study showed that both sexes tended to be in their late 60s when they received a lung-cancer diagnosis but that the women usually had smoked considerably less than the men.Still,at each stage of lung cancer, the women lived longer than the men.

If the reported results are confirmed, there are a few hints from other research that might explain the sex difference.Women’s bodies appear to have greater difficulty repairing the damage to their genes caused by smoking, but there is also some evidence that estrogen, which is found in women’s lungs as well as their ovaries, may interfere with some tumors’ability to grow.

There is one thing about which all investigators are ready to agree:lung cancer is particularly deadly and almost entirely preventable. So the take-home message is clear: Don’t smoke! If you do smoke, quit!

Questions:

41.What is the talk mainly about?

42.What was one of the requirements for the participants of the study?

43.Over the course of more than eight years, how many of the participants developed lung cancer?
