2.3 HOW TO WRITEA NOTICE
An effective notice follows some principles in its diction and layout.
The language of a notice should be brief.Make it a rule to use no more words than are needed to make your meaning clear. For example, when“for”is enough to express the meaning,do not use“for the purpose of”.
Brief, however, should not be achieved at the cost of completeness.A notice should be complete in its contents. For example,a notice of“Lost”should include what has been lost, when and where it was lost,as well as how the owner can be contacted.
The information provided by a notice should be clear.Use simple words instead of“big”words to make it easy to get the meaning across to the reader. For example,“chance”may be preferable to“opportunity”.
A notice should be laid out in such a way that it is attractive to the reader. For example, its title is usually printed in bold in the middle of the first line. The main information such as activity, time and place is also made distinct.Sometimes pictures are used to make the notice more attractive.
