More than 500 people have now died in Gaza since the current conflict began according to Palestinian health officials.The UN Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.Sunday was the deadliest day for both sides.The number of civilians who’ve died in this conflict has risen dramatically since an Israeli offensive began on Saturday night which came under intense artillery fire.“I can still hear the heavy Israeli shelling in the eastern areas of Gaza City about 3 kilometers from where I am.Elsewhere in southern Gaza this morning，there were two families killed by Israeli air strikes.And we’ve also had a fighting by Palestinian militants and attempted to launch a cross border attack into southern Israel through two tunnels.Now my colleague Paul Adams has been off to the east of Gaza City trying to find out what’s going on there.He went to the neighborhood.There the bombardment was intermittent.”
“It’s being rocketed absolutely continuously.You can see damage of the road here and no people at all.It’s terrible.We are sleeping on the floor.There is no food or drink.Our children are helpless.And the missiles keep falling all nights.”
The lady we were talking to just now，her story seems very typical.She was at home.She had to flee because of the shelling.She and her family sought shelter in one of the UN schools where people are flocking for safety.The UN says that around 80，000 or so people are now sheltering in about 44 of their schools.And the conditions there were really difficult.She tried to get back home to get supplies but found that she couldn’t get there safely.The situation was too difficult.And so you have a city where people are just moving this way and that trying to find shelter，trying to find food，trying to find water and never quite sure where to go.That was Paul Adams.
“Is it possible to characterize what people are making of the US Secretary of State John Kerry heading to Cairo for possible talks on a truce？”
“Well，certainly this is the highest level attempt to end the two weeks of fighting that we’ve seen here between Israel and Palestinian militants.For ordinary people in Gaza，it does give them just a small ray of hope at the moment.”
