In the mostly Christian Democratic Republic of Congo，the unemployment rate is extremely high.But one of the safest careers perhaps there is to become a priest or a pastor，though it’s no easy endeavor.In fact，it’s becoming increasingly competitive.Several worship schools have emerged in the country.They teach students specific skills that seem to have little to do with theological knowledge and more with show business.The BBC’s Moore Julian visited one of the schools and sent this report.
“This catchy pop tune is actually religious music.I’m in a school for preachers.And that’s the voice of one of the students who is recording an album in the school’s private studio.The curriculum here is rather surprising.Trainee preachers are not only taught how to devote themselves to the Lord，but also how to sing，how to play an instrument，and more generally，how to put on a great show.It’s important to adapt your singing pitch to your audience，not to sing too high or too low，so they can follow during the ceremony.‘There is sort of competition because churches know that part of the reason why people come in the church is the setup.There is music going on.The best it is，the more people come.’ Right now there is one student kneeling while the teacher has his hands on his forehead.He is asking the rest of the students to be a family for the young man next to him and employing God to help him through hardship.This type of prayer used to be specific，but it’s become so popular in Congo that now it’s also practiced by the more established Catholic and protestant churches.Churches are always full.There are quite a lot of people.Yeah.”
“Can you tell us a little bit about your story？”
“Yeah.I’ve applied for jobs everywhere in different companies.I haven’t received any feedback.So I’m waiting for them to call me.”
In a country where the unemployment rate is about 80% ，yet people continue to flood churches and give the little they have.A career as a pastor or a priest is highly enviable.And schools have bright days ahead.“In the Lagos workshop of the queens of African dolls，there’re women working on the sewing machine.So many features，like their black color，earrings and their hair，maybe queens of African dolls，truly African.The dolls are a sharp contrast to the white dolls which African children have traditionally played with.It is necessary for African children to play with dolls that represent their African identities.”
