[1]查尔斯·蒂利(Charles Tilly,2007)在一份书评中,提出了存在论—认识论—方法论的三分框架,认为第三波历史社会学在认识论和方法论都是主张诠释取向,存在论上则是认为“个体人类意识是社会过程的关键性发源及其所在之处”。蒂利所说的认识论和方法论相似,可合并为方法论层次。同时,尽管蒂利限于书评文体,没有展开论述。

[2]克莱门斯(Clemens,2005: 500)也使用“制度”概念,但是更为含糊和随意,无法展开分析。本章将其视为图式的同义词,在此略过。

[3]这里值得补充论证的是:第三波历史社会学所说的突现,并不是批判实在论脉络下的术语。尽管从第三波历史社会学的成员分布来看,乔治·斯坦梅茨(George Steinmetz)和伊莎贝茨·克莱门斯(Elisabeth S.Clemens)对批判实在论(critical realism)的支持易于误导。其中斯坦梅茨正是批判实在论在美国的重要代表,而他在为《重塑现代性》撰写的美国历史社会学史的回顾一章——《美国社会学的认识论式无意识以及后福特主义的转变:以历史社会学为例》(“The Epistemological Unconscious of U.S.Sociology and the Transition to Post-Fordism: The Case of Historical Sociology”)也是批判实在论的“科普文章”,详细陈述了批判实在论与美国主流的实证主义之不同(Steinmetz,2005:109-157)。同时,该书结论一章的作者及全书编辑的克莱门斯(Clemens,2007),在2007年发表的历史社会学回顾总结作品中,更是支援斯坦梅茨(Steinmetz,1998)及其理论来源巴斯卡(Roy Bhaskar),认为历史社会学要探讨“由汇聚的诸种因果机制所共同决定的复杂事件”。

[4]斯廷奇科姆(Stinchcombe,1978: 8)使用的词汇是“主导机制”(master mechanism),其意思是休厄尔(Sewell,1996:251-254)在分析蒂利作品时使用的“主导过程”。尽管斯廷奇科姆(Stinchcombe,1991)对于机制的探讨与他的深度类比方法论之间有衔接的可能性,但是本章仍使用了“主导过程”一词。
